ALERT: Apartment complex explodes as firefighters were investigating a smoking transformer in Washington. Residents of the Spanish Hills Apartments in Tacoma were startled by a large explosion following what fire investigators believe was an electrical fire. The failed electrical transformer filled the apartments with smoke, and authorities evacuated residents shortly before the large explosion occurred. Tacoma Fire Public Information Officer Chelsea Shephard said, “It sounds like the explosion actually happened inside the wall, but it did blow some particle board and such, like, outside the back door, so it was pretty significant” Nichole Grace, a resident, said, “We live across the green belt from the apartment that was mostly blown up… The windows were blown into the yard. The doors… the patio is crumbling from the bottom. It was really bad.” Luckily, no civilians or firefighters were injured, and residents who do not live in the affected buildings have been allowed to return home.
