For Junior Bowen, the nightmare of Hurricane Melissa was far more than the howling of 185-mile-per-hour winds. It was the horrifying moment when his house lifted off the ground, with him still inside, before he was hurled into nearby bushes. The 59-year-old resident of Carawina Road, Petersfield in Westmoreland, recounted the near-death experience as the Category Five hurricane tore through his home last Tuesday afternoon, leaving him battered, buried, and helpless beneath the rubble until he was rescued.

Here are some others who rushed in to help after Hurricane Helene destruction in WNC. They cleared storm debris from the lot of a veteran so we could place an RV that he could live in with his elderly mother and child with special needs after their home was destroyed. A Farmer from Minnesota, a truck driver from West Virginia, a veteran/small business owner from NC and a firefighter from NY. All volunteers. All good people. Focus on them instead.

Here are some others who rushed in to help after Hurricane Helene destruction in WNC. American independent journalist and storm chaser Jonathan Petramala, known for documenting some of the most extreme weather events on the planet, shared a touching story while reporting from Jamaica. Petramala mentioned he’d been trying to find a rain jacket since arriving in Jamaica after forgetting his poncho at home. "What took place this morning is very unfortunate," Kingston Western MP Desmond McKenzie said following an incident in his constituency. McKenzie said he was deeply concerned by how the situation unfolded but stressed that it would not affect his working relationship with Jamaica's security forces. "Everybody knows my position in dealing with criminal elements. If something went wrong, it is the right and responsibility of the police to investigate," he said. However, he questioned reports that a man who had been shot before 6:00 a.m. remained on the ground for an extended period, saying he could not ignore residents' concerns while maintaining that he did not interfere with the police investigation.
