For Junior Bowen, the nightmare of Hurricane Melissa was far more than the howling of 185-mile-per-hour winds. It was the horrifying moment when his house lifted off the ground, with him still inside, before he was hurled into nearby bushes. The 59-year-old resident of Carawina Road, Petersfield in Westmoreland, recounted the near-death experience as the Category Five hurricane tore through his home last Tuesday afternoon, leaving him battered, buried, and helpless beneath the rubble until he was rescued.

During my tour across Westmoreland Eastern with NaRRA CEO, Ambassador Antony Anderson and MP Dayton Campbell, I met Mr. Gregory Vidal, one of the many Jamaicans rebuilding with support from the ROOFS Programme after receiving a $500,000 grant to assist with roof repairs. Our conversation was an important reminder that this support is helping families recover from Hurricane Melissa and rebuild with hope.

During my tour across Westmoreland Eastern with NaRRA CEO, Ambassador Antony Anderson and MP Dayton Campbell, I met Mr. Gregory Vidal, one of the many Jamaicans rebuilding with support from the ROOFS Programme after receiving a $500,000 grant to assist with roof repairs. When Kenrick Smith saw his house lifting off the ground in the fury of Hurricane Melissa last Tuesday, instinct kicked in and he jumped from it. Had it not been for that quick action, Smith might not have survived as his home has been reduced to rubble. Here are some others who rushed in to help after Hurricane Helene destruction in WNC. They cleared storm debris from the lot of a veteran so we could place an RV that he could live in with his elderly mother and child with special needs after their home was destroyed. A Farmer from Minnesota, a truck driver from West Virginia, a veteran/small business owner from NC and a firefighter from NY. All volunteers. All good people. Focus on them instead.

Here are some others who rushed in to help after Hurricane Helene destruction in WNC. "What took place this morning is very unfortunate," Kingston Western MP Desmond McKenzie said following an incident in his constituency. McKenzie said he was deeply concerned by how the situation unfolded but stressed that it would not affect his working relationship with Jamaica's security forces.
