I join India’s energy fraternity in celebrating the 66th foundation day of Indian Oil Corp Ltd, India’s energy Maharatna and a leading OMC. In recent years, when global uncertainties and supply chain disruptions tested our resolve, IndianOil, along with other OMCs, ensured interrupted supply of fuel and LPG through difficult terrain and weather conditions to every region across the country. As India marches ahead to become the world’s third-largest economy under the decisive and visionary leadership of PM Sh Narendra Modi Ji, IndianOil is making significant contributions to India’s quest towards energy security and green transition by expanding refining capacity, scaling up city-gas networks, and investing in hydrogen, biofuels, and EV infrastructure to build a secure and sustainable energy future. Oil production has successfully recommenced from the PY-3 Field in the Cauvery Basin, Eastern Offshore India, effective 23rd May 2025 by the operator, Hardy Exploration. Shriyai Field (PY-3) resumed production with 4100 barrels per day which is expected to rise to approx. 7500 barrels per day by FY 2028-29. The India Growth Story which is resonating around the world is being confidently underlined by achievements of the energy sector particularly defined by the transition towards green fuels, thrust on exploration and production, augmenting capacities in both upstream & downstream segments and the focus on increasing natural gas in our energy mix from 6% to 15% under the dynamic leadership of PM Narendra Modi Ji. The growth in the number of LPG connections in the country during the Modi Decade has been spectacular. Till April 2014, with just little more than 14 crore LPG connections, spread largely around urban centres, about 44% households did not have access to LPG connections. Today, the country has more than 33 crore LPG connections including more than 10.33 crore #PMUjjwala connections transforming the lives of millions of our sisters & giving them clean & pollution free kitchens in both urban and rural areas of the country. We have achieved near saturation in terms of covering the households. PM-Ujjwala, which prioritises rural development, women empowerment, a healthy society, a clean environment, and social inclusion, has also expanded the distributor network system. In just a decade, the number of distributors in rural areas has grown by an impressive 83.46% while the bottling capacity has risen by 73.50%. This has also increased direct and indirect employment opportunities for the people around these installations. As India continues ahead on its impressive growth trajectory, the fruits of development are benefiting every section of the society. India did the entire world a favour by buying Russian oil because if we had not done so, the global oil prices would have skyrocketed to $200/barrel. Russian oil was never under any sanctions and there was only a price cap, which Indian entities also followed. Let us not forget that while some ill informed commentators talked about putting restrictions on India, many other European and Asian nations bought much more crude oil, diesel, LNG, rare earth minerals worth billions of dollars from Russia. We will continue to buy energy from whoever offers the best rates to our oil companies. That’s the confidence of PM Narendra Modi Ji’s leadership. We need to ensure steady availability, affordability and sustainability of energy for our 7 crore citizens who visit a petrol pump everyday. That’s our top priority. Exploration and production of oil and gas are long-gestation, capital-intensive activities, but they are vital for strengthening India’s energy security and reducing import dependence. Answering a question in Rajya Sabha today, I explained the progress of the Ashok Nagar oil and gas project in West Bengal. The production sharing contract was signed in 2008, a discovery was made in 2018, and ONGC has already invested over Rs 1,000 crore. The Bengal Basin is estimated to hold about 240 million barrels of oil equivalent, with a cumulative production value of nearly Rs 45,000 crore. West Bengal alone stands to receive around Rs 4,500 crore from this project. Under the newly notified legislation, introduced as part of the energy sector reforms driven by Prime Minister Sh Narendra Modi Ji’s vision, there is now complete clarity on stamp duty and royalty payments, creating a transparent and balanced framework that benefits both the state government and the operator. With the provisional Petroleum Mining Lease granted in February 2025 and constructive engagement between the Centre, the state and all stakeholders, I am confident that production will begin soon. States that cooperate with exploration and production activities have already seen substantial revenue gains and with this project and future discoveries, West Bengal’s revenues will rise further, contributing to growth, employment and India’s energy security. Congratulations Oil India Limited ! An ocean of energy opportunities reinforced in the Andaman Sea! Very happy to report the presence of natural gas in Sri Vijayapuram-3 an exploratory well drilled by Oil India Ltd. 15 km off the east coast of the Andaman Islands at a water depth of 355 meters. Initial production testing of the well at the depth of 1900 plus meters in the Eocene formation has established the presence of natural gas through continuous flaring. Oil India is carrying out gas sampling to assess the composition & calorific value of gas and to carry out isotope studies to understand the genesis of the gas. Under the Samudra Manthan Mission (National Deep Water Exploration Mission) announced by Hon’ble PM Narendra Modi Ji on Independence Day 2025, large number of deepwater & Ultra deepwater exploration wells are planned in our offshore basins to fully exploit our hydrocarbon reserves. Presence of hydrocarbon is now reported in 2(Two) wells out of 3 (Three) exploratory wells drilled by OIL in current exploratory campaign off Andaman Basin. This presence of natural gas will help us in taking forward our exploration ambitions in coordination with global deepwater exploration experts like @petrobras, TotalEnergies, bp India, Shell, ExxonMobil and will be a significant milestone in our journey through Amrit Kaal!
