APPLEBAUM: What JD Vance said is affront and outrage because war in Ukraine is not about 'few kilometers'. The war is about whether Ukraine gets to exist as a nation. And Russia never said they want ceasefire. Russia has never given up their main war aim, which remains the conquest or control of all of Ukraine. They've never conceded that Zelenskyy is the legitimate leader of Ukraine. None of this has ever happened.

Just facts. All Russian Orthodox Churches in Ukraine are parts of Russian Orthodox Church in Russia. They always been. And the fact that they simply changed the sign to "Ukrainian Orthodox Church" does not make them Ukrainian churches - every priest who has not renounced the Moscow church is a potential agent of the Kremlin. And more than one has been already caught spying during full scale war with Russia. And this is what Russian Orthodox Church represents on Russian Orthodox TV channel blessed by the head of the Russian church - Patriarch Kirill:

In Ukraine, they don’t shoot journalists, send opponents to Gulags, or poison them. In Russia, they do. They jail thousands of people. That’s why it’s so important for us to make the point to Putin about where Ukraine is going. It’s about direction, and we’re making a mistake by not saying it.

Ukraine has always been willing to agree to an energy ceasefire but the Russians do not want a ceasefire. So Ukraine blew up all of Russia's oil export terminals and the Russians only have themselves to blame.

Pomerantsev says if Russians do not take responsibility, no matter how much they are opposed to Putin, then "You are still living within Putin's propaganda model." 62% of Russians do not accept responsibility for the actions of the Russian army in Ukraine.
