On June 26, an all-hands fire broke out inside a basement apartment in a private dwelling in Queens. FDNY Fire Marshals determined the cause of the fire to be a lithium-ion battery that was charging in the kitchen of the fire apartment. The fire trapped a 48-year-old man inside the home, who had to escape through a bedroom window. The victim later died at a hospital. This is the first death in 2026 connected to a lithium-ion battery fire that happened this year. Where possible, charge and store lithium-ion batteries or micromobility devices OUTSIDE. Do not charge them overnight, and do not block any exits. It can mean the difference between life and death.

The Tulsa Fire Department released the following video to warn people about the "dangers of lithium-ion batteries." Two dogs and a cat were filmed hanging out before one of the dogs started the fire with the battery pack. The animals were filmed in the living room on an indoor monitoring camera, observing the fire before it got out of hand. "Lithium-ion batteries are known for storing a significant amount of energy in a compact space," the fire department said. "However, when this energy is released uncontrollably, it can generate heat, produce flammable and toxic gases, and even lead to explosions." The pets were able to escape the home through a dog door.

DeWalt 20V inverter with AC outlet and DC outputs. Around $70. Starlink Mini for the internet connection. Runtime: Roughly 6 hours of continuous standard internet use per battery. If you're only using internet here and there (checking messages, downloading updates, sending status), that's several days of intermittent use per battery. Speed is as good as you need for anything: video calls, streaming, downloads, everything. If you have DeWalt, Milwaukee, Ryobi, or Harbor Freight brand batteries already, they all make inverters like this one. Match the inverter brand to your battery brand for reliability. This morning Green Watch were called to a refuse lorry fire in Hilsea. On arrival quick thinking staff got safely to their depot and emptied the load to stop the fire from spreading to the lorry. Inside was this lithium ion battery which someone had thrown away in their bin.
