The rise of the disinformation-for-hire industry The emergence of a global, large-scale disinformation industry has privatised influence operations, granting states strategic reach with plausible deniability. A quiet revolution has taken place in the world of propaganda. Operations that used to be run by authoritarian governments and intelligence agencies are now outsourced to private firms that sell disinformation and deception as a service. From fake social-media armies to AI-driven smear campaigns, disinformation and Foreign Information Manipulation and Interference (FIMI) have become a global business, giving authoritarian regimes new ways to influence others – and to deny everything. From state propaganda to disinformation for hire For decades, information operations were tightly controlled by states. The Soviet Union perfected the craft of dezinformatsiya; later, Russia institutionalised it through modern digital operations such as the Internet Research Agency (IRA)(opens in a new tab). But over the past decade, this model has commercialised. Disinformation and deception have become a for-profit service offered by companies with intelligence, military, or marketing backgrounds. These firms, operating around the world, sell complete FIMI campaign packages that include fake social-media campaigns, hacking, data leaks, and ‘narrative management’ in order to spread false and manipulated content in democratic countries. Outsourcing as a shield This outsourcing provides both efficiency and deniability. Authoritarian states are now actively trying to externalise information operations to private intermediaries, while shielding themselves from diplomatic and legal consequences. Through this model, malign actors can also experiment with risky tactics such as AI-generated content, hacking, or deepfakes – operations that would be politically or diplomatically explosive if carried out directly by state institutions. In doing so, they can target foreign populations through tailored influence campaigns while maintaining plausible deniability by claiming no connection to the private entities running them. Outsourcing also enables information laundering — hiding the true origin of disinformation by passing it through private firms, fake accounts, and proxy media. As these actors repeat and amplify the message, it begins to look organic and locally produced. This lets malign actors spread targeted narratives while denying any involvement. The firm claimed to have interfered in 33 presidential elections, winning 27 of them. Its clients included political parties, corporations, and, allegedly, state-linked actors. At the heart of Team Jorge’s system was Advanced Impact Media Solutions (AIMS), software capable of creating and coordinating thousands of fake social-media accounts, complete with synthetic photos, biographies, and backstories. These avatars could be mobilised to flood debates, spread narratives, or harass opponents. Russia continues to be a major player in this outsourced ecosystem. Privately owned companies such as the Social Design Agency (SDA)(opens in a new tab) and Structura(opens in a new tab) now run large-scale influence operations that mirror, and in many ways replace, the functions of the old St. Petersburg troll factories. 🚨 HUGE NEWS: I’m suing Google today. What you’re about to see is insane. Since 2023, GoogleAI (Bard, Gemini & Gemma), has been defaming me with fake criminal allegations including sexual assault, child rape, abuse, fraud, stalking, drug charges, and even saying I was in Epstein’s flight logs. 🚨 HUGE NEWS: I’m suing Google today. What you’re about to see is insane. No studio. No mic. No camera. No host. No guest. And yet — I had my podcast in under 5 hours 🎙️ For a while now, I’ve been exploring ways to convert my English videos into Hindi. Thought about re-recording, dubbing, even using an AI avatar — but all of it felt expensive and effort-heavy So I tried this instead: Step 1: NotebookLM has this feature called “audio overview”. It takes any written text and turns it into a podcast-styled voiceover. I simply dropped my Youtube video URL — and within 10 minutes, there was a clean, translated Hindi podcast with dual-voice narration that actually sounds like two people chatting Step 2: Spent 3 hours stitching everything together: a) Recorded a short intro using Tella b) Generated AI visuals of my podcast co-hosts (Pixelcut + ChatGPT) c) Edited & sequenced everything using DaVinci Resolve — manual cuts, trims, timing etc. Step 3: The usual upload drill — thumbnail + title + description + tags etc. Took me another 1.5 hours And in under 5 hours, I had my own PODCAST EPISODE 👏👏👏 I’ll get faster (and better) with time but imagine the possibilities. Now, I can easily convert my earlier videos — not just in Hindi, but even Tamil, Marathi & other regional languages Likewise, if you want to learn about an industry. Just grab 6–7 relevant video URLs or a couple of research reports, drop them into NotebookLM — and boom, you’ve got yourself a podcast in less than 10 minutes. Turn your commute into a mini MBA 👨‍🎓 It’s early days — but this feels like a whole new format PS: I do wish I had that deep RJ-style voice like my co-hosts 😄 .

Google just confirmed the first case of hackers using AI to build a zero-day exploit from scratch. An actual zero-day vulnerability that no human had EVER found before, discovered by an AI model, turned into a working weapon, and aimed at a mass exploitation campaign targeting thousands of systems simultaneously. Google's Threat Intelligence Group caught it yesterday and killed the operation before it scaled. But the details of how it worked are genuinely scary: The AI found a flaw in a popular two-factor authentication system that traditional security tools had missed entirely. The vulnerability was a logic error buried deep in the authentication flow where a developer had hard-coded a trust exception years ago. No human security researcher or automated scanner had caught it. The flaw was invisible to EVERY tool the cybersecurity industry has built over the past two decades. But the AI spotted it immediately. Then it wrote a full Python exploit script to weaponize it. Google's analysts could tell the code was AI-generated because it had textbook formatting, educational comments explaining every function, and even a hallucinated severity score that doesn't exist in any real database. The AI literally graded its own attack with a fake rating. So the code had MISTAKES in it. The criminals' implementation was clumsy enough that it probably interfered with the actual deployment. This was the sloppy first attempt by people who are still learning how to use these tools. And it still found a vulnerability that the entire cybersecurity industry missed. Google's chief threat analyst John Hultquist said: "There's a misconception that the AI vulnerability race is imminent. The reality is that it's already begun. For every zero-day we can trace back to AI, there are probably many more out there." But here's where it gets truly insane... This wasn't even a sophisticated operation. North Korea's APT45 hacking unit is sending thousands of repetitive prompts to AI models, recursively analyzing known vulnerabilities and building an entire exploit arsenal that would be physically impossible for human hackers to assemble at the same speed. They're essentially industrializing cyberattacks. A Chinese state-linked group jailbroke Google's own Gemini by simply asking it to "pretend to be a network security expert" and then used that persona to research how to hack TP-Link routers and corporate file transfer systems. Another Chinese group deployed autonomous AI agents that probed a Japanese tech firm with minimal human oversight, deciding on their own which tools to use and pivoting between targets based on internal reasoning. And then there's PROMPTSPY, an Android backdoor that calls Google's Gemini API to read your phone screen in real time, navigate your interface autonomously, capture your biometric data, replay your lock screen PIN, and block you from uninstalling it by placing an invisible overlay over the uninstall button. It literally OPERATES your phone using commercial AI tools anyone can access. Everyone spent the last 3 years arguing about whether AI would take people's jobs. Meanwhile AI is making every password, every firewall, and every two-factor authentication system on Earth fundamentally less secure. The entire $190 billion cybersecurity industry was built on one assumption: that finding vulnerabilities is hard and requires deep expertise. But AI just removed that assumption from the equation. And the scariest part is that Google said the criminals made errors this time. The implementation was rough and the campaign probably didn't fully work. Where are we in the consumer AI cycle? I went on Bloomberg Technology to discuss what we a16z are seeing from studying the data since 2023. So far, a rising tide has lifted all boats. But, we're starting to see ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini diverge in approach to winning the consumer. My main takeaways 👇 1. ChatGPT is still dominant - but the race for "default AI" is on. On web, ChatGPT is 2.7x larger than #2 Gemini. On mobile, 2.5x larger. But, ~20% of weekly ChatGPT users are now also using Gemini in the same week - and Claude is growing quickly with developer and prosumer use cases. 2. AI is going global - but not where you'd expect. We built a per-capita adoption index by country - Singapore ranks #1, followed by Hong Kong, the UAE, South Korea. The U.S. is down at #20 - with both a smaller % of white collar workers for whom AI is valuable, and more cultural pushback. 3. The creative tool category has completely transformed. In our first edition, 7 of 9 creative tools were image generators. Today only 3 remain - video, music, and voice have taken their slots. OpenAI and Google focusing on native image gen means you need to be specialized to standalone. 4. Agents are here. Manus and Genspark both made the web ranks - and if our data was for February (not January), OpenClaw would have debuted at #30! But, it has still not escaped containment to the mainstream consumer - expect more packaging around agents for specific use cases. 5. AI is leaving the browser. Between Cursor, Claude Code + Cowork, Granola, Wispr, and others, users are increasingly interacting with AI via desktop apps. We will have to evolve our methodology as AI becomes more ambient - and can't be measured by a website hit or app download. 6. AI-enhanced (not AI-native) players are waking up. For the first time, we included six legacy products that are now meaningfully AI enabled. Only 3 made the top 15 on web - including Notion, which reports 50% of ARR from AI. The others? Canva, Freepik, Grammarly, Capcut, and Picsart. Thanks to Caroline Hyde and Ed Ludlow for having me on - can't wait to see what the report looks like in another 6 months!

Users of X have turned to its Grok AI tool to create so many Amelia memes, she is now breaking out of niche online silos. The origins of the character are ironic, to say they least. An early iteration of Amelia began life in a counter-extremism video game funded by the UK Home Office and created to deter young people aged 13-18 from being attracted to far right extremism in Yorkshire. Pathways: Navigating the Internet and Extremism is a simple multiple choice format game with basic animation. Its players are taken on a journey as characters at a college. They are invited to make decisions in scenarios including whether or download potentially extremist content or join an Amelia character on a rally organised by “a small political group” protesting against changes in society and the “erosion in British values”. Certain scenarios simulated in the game result in a referral under the British government’s Prevent counter-terrorism programme. However, it is a subversion of the Amelia character that has exploded across social media channels in a way that has astonished even the creators of the original game. Among the plethora of increasingly sophisticated AI-generated iterations are a Manga-style Amelia, a Wallace and Gromit version and AI-generated “real life” encounters between her and the characters of Father Ted or Harry Potter, accompanied by racist language and far-right messaging. Analysis provided to the Guardian by Peryton Intelligence, a UK company that monitors disinformation, indicated that an anonymous account known for skilfully disseminating far-right messaging started the Amelia meme on X on 9 January with a post that has since been viewed 1.4m times. The volume of “Ameliaposting” has since gone from an average of 500 a day when that account first introduced it to the world to roughly 10,000, starting on 15 January as it hit international audiences. On Wednesday, it hit 11,137 posts on X alone. In one of the most surreal twists, an Amelia cryptocurrency has emerged, with social media users seeking to leverage its value on the meme’s rising profile. On Wednesday, Elon Musk retweeted an X account promoting an Amelia cryptocurrency token. “What we’re seeing is the monetisation of hate,” said Matteo Bergamini, the founder and CEO of Shout Out UK, a political and media literacy training company that created the original game. “We’ve seen Telegram groups all messaging each other in Chinese about the meme coin and talking about how to artificially inflate its value, so a lot of money is being made.” The company itself has been the target of a deluge of hate mail, including threats that have now been reported to the police. It always takes me a little time to absorb the events of the day before adding new commentary. There’s no question, Friday’s events took some absorbing for sure. I’ve watched the entire clip of the ‘Ambush in the Oval’ a few times and it is beyond doubt, it was a staged event in which it had been decided, the best leverage could be had by publicly humiliating Zelensky in front of the world’s media. Once you take a closer look at the staging, it becomes very clear who this event was being staged for. Among the hand-picked pool of reporters for the Oval Office presser, was an interesting addition. A correspondent for TASS, the Russian state media organization. It’s worthy of note that AP and Reuters were deliberately excluded. The White House later claimed this was an error and the reporter was eventually asked to leave. In addition, there was a plant in the room. The boyfriend of Marjorie Taylor Green, Brian Glenn. He reports for fringe conservative site ‘Real America's Voice’. This was the guy who asked Zelensky "Why don't you wear a suit? You're the highest level in this country's office, and you refuse to wear a suit”, adding “Do you own a suit” JD Vance openly laughed as the question was posed. Zelenskyy’s polite response? "I will wear a suit after this war is over. Maybe something like yours. Maybe better." It was a vacuous question asked in order to tee up Vance for his disgusting demand that Zelenskyy show gratitude to the man who had run a campaign on not providing a cent in military aid to Ukraine. The current Kremlin talking points are that Zelenskyy should step down. We saw this being echoed by the likes of Lyndsay Graham and other right wing talking heads. Effectively, the hard right is doing the bidding of the Kremlin propaganda machine, in an attempt to do what Russia has not been able to do since day one of the invasion. Remove Zelenskyy from the chess board. In addition, they’re running a bogus impeachment narrative, using the line “Ukrainian MP Oleksandr Dubinsky just called for an Emergency Session of Ukraine’s Parliament to initiate IMPEACHMENT” For context, Dubinsky is a suspect in a number of criminal cases related to corruption and treason. He was charged with document forgery in August 2023 after he allegedly travelled abroad under a false pretext. In addition, the US had sanctioned him in 2021, alleging ties to a Russian influence network and interference in the 2020 US election. I think it safe to say, he is of dubious character. This impeachment narrative is already on this platform being circulated by MAGA accounts. As they say, "A lie can travel halfway around the world while the truth is putting on its shoes". Replacing Zelenskyy is now a top priority for the Kremlin. Therefore, it’s a top priority for the U.S. administration. Think about that for a moment and let it sink in. Trump allies are now actively using Kremlin talking points to unseat the Democratically elected president of a sovereign nation. Sound familiar? Zelenskyy is clearly exhausted. This is a man whose country is under siege not only from Russian aggression, but from a proxy Russian campaign run from inside the White House, to undermine his authority. The pressure must be off the chart. Let’s be clear, all Zelenskyy did was stand up for his people against an international criminal extortion gang, attempting to strip an ally of its mineral rights. I have said all week he should not sign the agreement and he was right not to do so. Now the real challenge begins. Among the hand-picked pool of reporters for the Oval Office presser, was an interesting addition. A correspondent for TASS, the Russian state media organization. It’s worthy of note that AP and Reuters were deliberately excluded. The White House later claimed this was an error and the reporter was eventually asked to leave. In addition, there was a plant in the room. The boyfriend of Marjorie Taylor Green, Brian Glenn. He reports for fringe conservative site ‘Real America's Voice’. This was the guy who asked Zelensky "Why don't you wear a suit? You're the highest level in this country's office, and you refuse to wear a suit”, adding “Do you own a suit” JD Vance openly laughed as the question was posed. Zelenskyy’s polite response? "I will wear a suit after this war is over. Maybe something like yours. Maybe better." It was a vacuous question asked in order to tee up Vance for his disgusting demand that Zelenskyy show gratitude to the man who had run a campaign on not providing a cent in military aid to Ukraine. The current Kremlin talking points are that Zelenskyy should step down. We saw this being echoed by the likes of Lyndsay Graham and other right wing talking heads. Effectively, the hard right is doing the bidding of the Kremlin propaganda machine, in an attempt to do what Russia has not been able to do since day one of the invasion. Remove Zelenskyy from the chess board. In addition, they’re running a bogus impeachment narrative, using the line “Ukrainian MP Oleksandr Dubinsky just called for an Emergency Session of Ukraine’s Parliament to initiate IMPEACHMENT” For context, Dubinsky is a suspect in a number of criminal cases related to corruption and treason. He was charged with document forgery in August 2023 after he allegedly travelled abroad under a false pretext. In addition, the US had sanctioned him in 2021, alleging ties to a Russian influence network and interference in the 2020 US election. I think it safe to say, he is of dubious character. This impeachment narrative is already on this platform being circulated by MAGA accounts. As they say, "A lie can travel halfway around the world while the truth is putting on its shoes". Replacing Zelenskyy is now a top priority for the Kremlin. Therefore, it’s a top priority for the U.S. administration. Think about that for a moment and let it sink in. Trump allies are now actively using Kremlin talking points to unseat the Democratically elected president of a sovereign nation. Sound familiar? Zelenskyy is clearly exhausted. This is a man whose country is under siege not only from Russian aggression, but from a proxy Russian campaign run from inside the White House, to undermine his authority. The pressure must be off the chart. Let’s be clear, all Zelenskyy did was stand up for his people against an international criminal extortion gang, attempting to strip an ally of its mineral rights. I have said all week he should not sign the agreement and he was right not to do so. Now the real challenge begins. The good news for Zelenskyy is, he is now among friends as he found when he landed in London last night.

In fact, if I get the same amount of votes in 2026 as I did in 2024 (1.34M) - I win (average turnout in a midterm, including a Gubernatorial race, is approximately 2.5M votes). 2) One early poll had me winning over Markey by a couple points. 3) Unlike the race against Elizabeth Warren, Ed Markey will be forced to spend millions in a contested primary 🆚 Seth Moulton (the latest polling has Markey up by 19 points among democratic primary voters but Moulton has approximately $3M cash on hand and isn’t going away. In fact, they’re already seeing which one of them can race the furthest to the far-left. TL;DR: If you’re afraid to exercise your rights, you’ve already lost them. Six years ago, I started looking into QAnon because it was using game techniques and psychological tactics that I was familiar with because I had helped design them decades before. And what I saw was not normal. It was not a natural outgrowth of the internet. It was a death cult. And so I tracked it for six months until I saw that it was organizing to attack the Capitol. So I warned about it. I yelled about it online. Other people did as well. No one listened. Sure enough, on January 6th, the worst political crime in American history happened. The seat of our democracy was attacked. And I identified who did it, who conspired to do it, including Mike Flynn as the leader of QAnon and the cheerleader of the Proud Boys and the Oath Keepers, who was cheering for his digital soldiers to be ready to die on January 6th. And Kash Patel in the Pentagon, ensuring through a memo, through Chris Miller, through Mike Flynn’s brother Charles, that the National Guard could not help, could not prevent that crowd of violent QAnon, Proud Boys and Oath Keepers from trying to murder Mike Pence and Nancy Pelosi—and cops. So I’ve spent seven days a week for six years trying to unravel why it happened, how it happened, and how we can build a system that will not allow it to happen again. 38 months ago, Mike Flynn and Kash Patel decided it was going to be a good idea to sue me, somebody who was tweeting about them, who was blogging about them. Not because I defamed them, but because I was right about them. I could have made it go away. I could have deleted my posts or going crying away and tried to settle. This is America. It is my right to speak about people, especially when it involves crimes against my government. So if I can be any inspiration or model to anyone, it’s all been worth it. I don’t like the attention. I am not somebody who enjoys being in the spotlight. But if you come at me, an American citizen exercising my rights, I am going to defend them. 🚩Breaking: Ed Gallrein (Thomas Massie’s opponent) scampers away after refusing to answer questions about his stance on Right to Life issues. 🚩 Ed showed up at a CareNet event in Northern Kentucky (a pro-life event) and then floundered, refusing to answer basic questions. Gallrein was asked why he didn’t fill out a survey for Kentucky Right to Life. (He has also refused to fill out surveys for groups like the Family Foundation, Commonwealth Policy Center, and National Association of Gun Rights.) His responses ranged from “I thought I filled it out — I’ll get on it,” to “Well, I filled one out when I ran for state senate two years ago,” to “Well, you didn’t endorse me before.” He never once answered where he stands on specific issues such as exemptions or national abortion laws. At one point he claimed he is “100% pro-life,” but the obvious follow-up question is: What does that actually mean? Where does he stand on the specific issues? His refusal to specify his views should be concerning to everyone. Once Ed realized he was being filmed, he quickly left and refused to answer any more questions. Why does this matter in the race? KY-4 is 18% Catholic, compared to the rest of Kentucky, which averages around 8% Catholic. If Ed didn’t want to be asked about his positions on pro-life issues, why did he show up at a pro-life event? Why won’t he respond to surveys? For contrast, Thomas Massie did respond to the questionnaire and received a 100% pro-life rating based on his answers. I have tried to be as objective as possible on the federal races in Kentucky as I report on them. Up until a few weeks ago, I had hardly posted about the KY-4 race — even though I live in the district and am a 4/4 Republican primary voter.
