Just 15 meters away from Chanditala Police Station, while I was on my way to submit a deputation, BJP-backed miscreants launched a violent attack on me. A hard object was hurled directly at my head, causing injuries to my head and pain in my chest. The nature of the assault clearly suggests an attempt to inflict serious harm, if not take my life. If an opposition Member of Parliament can be attacked in broad daylight, in full view of the police and so close to a police station, one must ask: where is the security for ordinary party workers and supporters? Yesterday it was Abhishek Banerjee, today it is me. Such attacks will not intimidate us or force us into silence. Our struggle against the BJP government’s culture of political intimidation, misuse of state machinery, and the steady erosion of democratic values will continue unabated. We will undoubtedly protect Ukraine and restore freedom throughout our country. We all believe that this will be a different Ukraine. The same borders. The same vibrant democracy. Ukraine will continue to be one of Europe’s most free nations. What there will not be is the old "business as usual" for those who have robbed Ukraine and placed themselves above the law and any rules. We are amidst some truly tough times and real issues of disagreement that must be addressed and frankly fought over in our civic spaces. I will stand strong in my work and mission to do what I believe is best for NJ residents and Americans. I will fight relentlessly hard. But how we fight is important. We can be fierce fighters without being cruel or demeaning. We can be warriors for justice and still embody grace and decency. We can be angry, demanding, and determined without being dehumanizing, degrading or "othering" our opposition. It doesn't weaken one's work to maintain a commitment to principles of nonviolence, civility, and respect. In fact, in the long run, it not only strengthens one's cause but it strengthens our democracy.

We cannot mix the holy and the profane. We cannot abuse the altars of our God in the name of political convenience. We cannot politicize the church and turn the pulpit into a campaign platform. People bear burdens and those must be lifted when believers tread on holy ground. Our children will never forgive us if we fail to put an end to this degenerate madness. And I repeat, this fight does not require holy men—such do not exist—it only requires men and women, women especially, who have shame.
