The University as a Joke: My UNIABUJA UNIVERSITY OF ABUJA Experience When the Students’ Union Government of the University of Abuja, led by Comrade Yusuf Tobi Jamiu, invited me for an interactive session with students, I was skeptical. Given the recent decline in the courage and independence of students’ unions across Nigeria, I didn’t expect much. Still, I decided to give it a try. I came straight from Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport to the University. An advance team already on the ground hinted that something was off; they couldn’t locate the Students’ Union President on time, and the hall reserved for the event looked deserted. Soon after, one of them informed me that the university authorities had cancelled the program. Not long after, Comrade Jamiu himself reached out to say the event would still hold. So, I headed to the university gate. There, I was stopped by campus security, who bluntly told me the management had declared my visit “unacceptable.” They claimed the Students’ Union had no permission to host me on campus. I alighted from the vehicle and sat on a dilapidated chair by the gate, refusing to leave immediately a silent protest. As I sat there, I witnessed a scene that summed up the death of our university system, a female student was barred from entering the campus for “improper dressing.” When I asked if the university bought clothes for its students, the confused security men eventually allowed her in, perhaps to avoid a scene. Moments later, Comrade Jamiu arrived to apologise, visibly helpless. I couldn’t help but wonder whether he had been elected to lead or to kneel, to represent the students or to appease the school authorities. After a brief conversation, I left saddened but not surprised. What I saw at the University of Abuja was not an institution of learning, but a graveyard of courage and ideas. Our universities are dying — not for lack of resources, but for lack of integrity, independence, and freedom. Nigerian universities are dead. What remains is the struggle to resurrect them.

Beyond horrifying: ‘Tulane for #Palestine’, a group not registered with the university but made up of Tulane students, held a pro-#Hamas rally off campus. Jewish and Israeli students, as well as their allies, peacefully held #Israeli flags across the road, and were viciously attacked and beat up by a group of pro-Hamas demonstrators. A pro-Hamas student was going to burn the Israeli flag when a Jewish student decided to take the flag away. As a crowd of Hamas supporting students rushed towards the Jewish student, security in the area went to break it up, but not before a pro-Hamas protester hit a student in the head with a pole, resulting in the hospitalization of the Jewish student. Since the event wasn’t on campus, however, Tulane did not intervene. This is what college students are experiencing on and off campus around the country. Now, more than ever, administrations must stand by their Jewish students.

Reports indicate that the senior student became angry after allegedly feeling disrespected by the junior student and subsequently attacked him in front of other students. OAU transport system was near perfect, adequate buses and bikes, we rarely experienced queues until the First Lady came and decided she didn’t like the ease of transportation and introduced “change” by donating CNG buses. The school management in turn banned all motorcycles and commercial buses on campus and subjected over 30,000 students to just about 50 buses and a few tricycles. OAU has one of the largest land masses of any Nigerian university, yet students are now stranded daily. This is a Monday morning where students are supposed to rush for class, but they are stuck at the campus gate because of the inefficiency of the CNG buses. Students are struggling to go to class in the morning and in the evenings to even get back to their hostels. Students staying off campus now spend almost double to get to campus, all alternative transport means have been removed The management have cars to bypass all of this, but majority of students do not. Yet they released statements talking about how the buses will “ease transportation” and even implied students appreciate the system. Meanwhile, students are trekking, missing classes, and spending hours in queues. Let it be clear that students do not appreciate this system. It has made our lives harder, not better. What used to be a smooth system has now become a daily struggle. There are many pressing issues in this school, but they chose to dismantle a working transport system and replace it with hardship. We can no longer remain silent. Let the whole world know what OAU students are going through. The student said it was meant to teach students how to respond if ICE ever came to the class—and how white students needed to use their bodies to "cover" and "shield" other students who may be likely targets of immigration enforcement. The student, who initially did not want to be anonymous but did so to protect family and friends, said that as a future educator, “I would never ever instruct my own students to put their own safety on the line.” The university told Alpha News it is aware of the situation and conducting a thorough review.

After Monday’s resolution promising electricity restoration within 24-48 hours, power to student residences has instead been cut off. They’re essentially making students pick if they are pro-Israel or pro-Palestine. BDS activity on campus has led to a rise in antisemitism on campus. It only causes division on campus and isolates Jewish students. We have been contacted by concerned students at University of Oxford after the Radcliffe Camera was reportedly scaled by members of the Oxford Action for Palestine Society. For over fifteen months, Jewish students have endured an atmosphere of hostility and exclusion, with little action taken to address their concerns. This unacceptable reality cannot continue.

This is happening right now at Oxford University. Two days ago, at the Technical University of Munich, students announced they wanted to enter a dialogue with administrators. Some faculty even confirmed their attendance. Then, once they were in the room the admin quite literally called the cops on them and they were held hostage inside the university for 3 hours, and at no point were allowed to leave contrary to the university's statements. A 24 hour ban was also issued on everyone present. This wasn't a protest, nor an occupation, nor an interruption. The City of Brampton has led the conversation in Canada for international students visas to be linked to housing, and we are pleased that Algoma University is expanding their footprint in Brampton with the building of a new student residence with over 500 beds. This is exactly what we hoped for. Located at Park St and Nelson Street West, it will be a short walk to the downtown campus, providing safe, affordable housing for students.
