He predicted the Arctic could be ice-free by the summer of 2030, likely even earlier. Nearly two decades later, the data tell a very different story. According to the NSIDC's own records, September sea ice has shown no downward trend since 2007 - 18 years of stability. Despite rising CO2 levels and every claimed feedback mechanism, the ice is not budging. It remains right where it was in the mid-2000s. As climate researcher Javier Vinos put it, "Clearly the models on which these predictions are based do not accurately reflect the actual climate." A new study shows a thick ice cap in Greenland was completely ice-free just 7,000 years ago. The cap is Prudhoe Dome, which today is some 1,600 feet thick. The researchers drilled through the ice and dated the sediments below it. It turns out those sediments were once exposed to sunlight, meaning there was no ice. 7,000 years ago, summer temperatures were 3 to 5C warmer than today. This study shows, once again, that large ice losses have occurred in the recent past, caused entirely by natural climate variability - no CO2 forcing required.

A new study shows a thick ice cap in Greenland was completely ice-free just 7,000 years ago. The cap is Prudhoe Dome, which today is some 1,600 feet thick. The researchers drilled through the ice and dated the sediments below it. It turns out those sediments were once exposed to sunlight, meaning there was no ice. 7,000 years ago, summer temperatures were 3 to 5C warmer than today. This study shows, once again, that large ice losses have occurred in the recent past, caused entirely by natural climate variability - no CO2 forcing required.
