This is Ducati’s Desmodromic valve system. This one does not require springs, unlike conventional engines. It is great for performance (which this engine is built for) but it requires a valve adjustment every 30,000 Km. Ducati owners dread this service.

By spreading that contact around the full circumference, the rotation evens out heat and mechanical wear so the valve seals cleanly for much longer. White marks painted on the coils make the rotation visible on camera. Without them, the movement would be impossible to see.
