The UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, Mr. Tom Fletcher, called on the Deputy Prime Minister/Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar Ishaq Dar today. DPM/FM appreciated the role of the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in providing humanitarian assistance to people during disasters and conflicts across the globe. He also appreciated OCHA’s work during climate-induced disasters in Pakistan. He expressed Pakistan’s commitment to continue supporting the vital work being carried out by OCHA, especially to address the humanitarian situation in the Occupied Palestinian Territory. Mr. Tom Fletcher commended Pakistan’s ongoing efforts for regional peace and stability, and appreciated its invaluable contributions to the United Nations over the years.

The United Nations World Food Programme’s Executive Director Cindy McCain said they “had a convoy attacked last week, and then we had our warehouse blown up… both in Ukraine.” When asked why there is such violence towards aid workers in conflicts around the world, she said that globally, respect for humanitarian law and decency towards aid workers “simply isn't happening at all right now,” as the number of aid providers killed in conflict zones over the past three years exceeds 1,000 according to the United Nations.
