The Chinese are advancing on 6th-generation fighters, but I have serious doubts about whether this is truly the right path. Recently, the Turkish company Baykar flew two combat drones that operate in perfect synchronization, guided from a ground base. They executed coordinated maneuvers autonomously and are already capable of conducting BVR (Beyond Visual Range) engagements. The Kızılelma became the first drone to achieve an autonomous kill with an air-to-air missile guided by its own AESA radar. This level of Turkish progress, combined with the kill web integration that Chinese drones are demonstrating, isn’t it a strong indication that manned 6th-generation fighters might be an extraordinarily expensive fantasy? I’ll go further: some drones are already reaching speeds above Mach 3.5 - more than double those of the leading current manned fighters. I’m talking about drones capable of high-speed coordinated operations, fully autonomous, with integrated and shared weapon systems, flying at altitudes far higher than conventional fighters, and employing systems similar to Aegis. How much longer until these drones take off in large swarms, equipped with ultra-modern sensors controlled by AI and armed with long-range air-to-air missiles? How could a human pilot, even at the height of adrenaline, make faster and more accurate decisions, involving multiple scenarios and factors, than an AI commanding a pack of smaller, more agile drones operating at different altitudes? We are entering the real competition between man and machine. Even if a pilot in a 6th-generation fighter has control over slave drones and an entire Aegis-like kill web, what is the point of having him there if everything can be done autonomously, more safely, more cheaply, and in far greater numbers? Some argue that the human pilot offers advantages in unpredictable scenarios where today’s AI still fails, and I agree. But I’m not talking about current AI: I’m talking about the AI of 2030–2040, far more advanced than anything we know today. Geran drones equipped with air-to-air missiles prove that air combat drones can be extremely low-cost, while the Turkish tests show, in a far more sophisticated way, that drones designed for air-to-air missions are evolving much faster than 6th-generation aircraft, whose development and production costs are exorbitant. When we put together the Geran, the Kızılelma, and the drone kill web integration the Chinese are achieving, the question arises: is the future really manned 6th-generation fighters, or much cheaper drones produced in greater numbers, better protected, and more capable? Wouldn’t it be smarter to invest in well-equipped autonomous 6th-generation drones rather than treating them merely as wingmen? It seems that keeping a human pilot on board has more to do with ethical principles and preserving our role than with genuine operational necessity. And how would humanity react to the constant killing of human beings by AI-guided drones? Drones will be cheaper to develop, easier to produce, and possibly more agile than conventional fighters, even 6th-generation ones. In cost-benefit terms, the price of a single 6th-generation fighter could buy dozens of equivalent or even superior drones. This would save hundreds of billions of dollars and could put whoever adopts the strategy a step ahead. The Chinese, by the way, are very well positioned in this race, with HALE drones already armed with air-to-air missiles and integrated into an extensive kill web, which I will describe in detail soon.

Ukrainian heavy drones, which perform various tasks (as a relay, for logistics, mining and destruction), have become an integral part of Ukrainian defense. It is extremely difficult to imagine the battlefield through the eyes of a UA military without this class of drones. For years together with my fighters we have been preparing for the fact that the enemy is about to scale this direction and a similar class of drones will appear in their hands. For the first time I met them during the Kursk operation. But what was my surprise that Russians after 5 years of war have not yet tested these drones and launched them into series. But it will be changed. Undoubtedly, the appearance and scaling of certain drones on both sides is due to the conditions in which they work (for example, Russian INs are not even close to Ukrainian ones), but it is difficult to find arguments for abandoning this class of drones. And Russians are not abandoning them. But they see a significantly smaller role in them than in the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Russian plans include the creation of UAV battalions (which are significantly smaller in number of personal than Ukrainian ones) as part of regiments and brigades, where each battalion will have 4 crews of heavy drones. And Russian newly formed SBS forces according to plans should receive two companies of heavy bombers. And I only hope that this should not be a surprise for the Armed Forces of Ukraine as it was in the case with the completely symmetrical and non-innovative actions from «Rubicon». How I get shit done, Episode 001 I've set up a playbook called ‘land’, which is triggered automatically when I drag an issue into the merging column in Linear. That reliably runs CI and merges any green PRs. This has allowed me to ship way faster than before. I think the key takeaway here is you can try to build your own code factory and your own agent orchestration layer, but it is a huge amount of work. The truth is there are entire companies with massive funding that are already tackling this and it's just easier to use their platform. I think this is a lot like if you were a carpenter: you could build your own generator, fuel it, wire it up, and then build a plug and then you could plug your saw into it. Or you could just plug your saw into the wall. Because the electricity company has already done all the work in the infrastructure and investment to make that plug work. I think more of us who are building companies should just be plugging into the wall instead of trying to build all this tooling ourselves. As a dev it's so tempting to build your own dev tools but I think a lot of times, even though you can build fast with agents now, it's a complete waste of time. It probably sounds like I'm being paid by Devin or something but I have zero financial interest here. They don't give me credits. I'm not an investor. I'm not being paid. I just think the tooling is really damn good. If you used Devin a long time ago and wrote it off, you really should have another look - for $500/month it's pretty obscene what you can get done.

Today, Ukrainian city of Kherson is being hit daily by hundreds of Russian drones. A year ago, the region was attacked by about 700 drones per month; now, that number has risen to 2,700 in a week. In August alone, Russians carried out almost 10,000 drone strikes across Kherson region. The Dnipro district of Kherson lies in the "red zone", closest to the front line. In the Korabel neighborhood, not a single apartment block remains undamaged by strikes. Safety is relative: drones can reach any part of the city. ▪️ Everyday life in war Living next to the enemy has forced Kherson residents to adopt "survival rules": checking Telegram channels for alerts before leaving home; walking only under trees or along walls; watching both the sky and the ground to avoid mines. When driving, windows stay open to hear the buzzing of drones. Some residents install drone detectors that can warn of FPVs and sometimes even display an intercepted image from the drone’s camera. The most terrifying thing is to see your own car on that screen. It’s dangerous not only to step outside, but even to go out on a balcony. Anti-drone nets have only recently begun to be installed, covering key transport arteries. But it is nearly impossible to shield every street. The main protection comes from electronic warfare systems, which jam four out of five drones. Today, Kherson is a vivid illustration of what any city can turn into once the so-called "Russian world" draws near. No theft, no litter.
