A walk through a gothic cathedral with particular emphasis on the Gothic arch. Gothic is my first love and I think the most beautiful of all the church architecture.

Did you know that the National Cathedral is bent at the Great Crossing? It stays off exact symmetry as an optical correction.

Apparently it’s common in medieval cathedrals, too. Small adjustments to prevent optical illusions from making the space seem shorter or smaller.

Do I love Gothic? Oh yes. My ex father in law studied with Emil Male. So I have had amazing tours. But I challenge anyone to see Vezelay and not come away changed. Late Romanesque but so beautiful.

I think art deco could have beaten it but it never got to fully express itself. So Gothic is the best.
