Nearly 6,000 children in Gaza were hospitalized last month alone for urgent treatment for malnutrition, including more than 1,000 cases of severe malnutrition, the most serious stage and deadly. HELP: Babies are without nutrition as their mothers cannot breast feed due to their lack of food consumption, and formula for them is widely unavailable and when can be found it is extremely expensive. The Sameer Project distributed 39 cans of infant formula to inpatients at Al Rantisi Hospital on July 12. This was part of our purchase the very same day of 82 cans of formula each can costing 175 shekels in cash, so after 40% cash withdrawal commission fees, we paid $6,057 for the whole purchase. That’s approximately $75 per can to save a baby’s life. And thanks to you we could provide this for those in the most dire need. With the imminent possibility of babies dying from complications caused by malnutrition, The Sameer Project focused on this horrific situation by calling every contact we have in Gaza to source baby formula. We were able to find and purchase 82 cans of formula Number 1 and 2 for infants and those that cannot digest other types. Each can cost 175 shekels in cash, so after 40% cash withdrawal commission fees, it was nearly $75, and $6,057 for the whole purchase. We were able to do this because of your contributions. One can of formula for $75 will save a baby’s life. We purchased the cans and within one hour of picking them up they were delivered to babies in the hospitals, on oxygen, and needing the nutritional support the most. This is Patient Friend’s Hospital in Gaza City where we distributed 30 cans to inpatients and 6 to babies waiting in the hallways to be examined. Help: Babies like Hassan who you see here, who are awaiting evacuation but the longer they remain in Gaza their condition is deteriorating since they do not have the strength to fight. The Sameer Project medical team recently distributed nutritional support in Nasser Hospital, Khan Younis, for the inpatients as well as the outpatient pharmacy. We gave out cans of F-75, used specifically and only for diagnosed cases of malnutrition. Cerelac, a transitional formula older babies take to prepare them for solid food. And boxes of “Riri” nutritional supplements that are fortified with vitamins and minerals and can be eaten as a formula or pudding consistency for toddlers. Our nurses explained to the mothers how to utilize each type of product to help their children gain weight and grow stronger. You’re hearing directly from the head of the Pediatric Department at Nasser Hospital about the dire situation for neonatal intensive care patients. These premature and full term babies that need nutritional support are unable to get it from their mother’s breast milk (because of the mother’s own malnutrition) and the hospitals are also finding it difficult to find replacement formula. Support: Dr. Al-Farra needed milk to care for these infants and The Sameer Project supplied it. We recently delivered 40 cans of extra large Similac to the neonatal ICU. Summer is here and it’s really hot in Gaza reaching 30 degrees Celsius / 86 Fahrenheit. Now imagine that being a sick patient in a tent. Help now: That’s the case for many of the families in The Sameer Project camps and many cases get seizures due to the heat. We have multiple solar panels in our camps but they can’t provide fans for everyone, so our medical team assessed those most in need. The Refaat Alareer Camp is a medical camp, meaning we have criteria for the families that we bring in who have vulnerable conditions, chronic illnesses or injuries, so that we utilize our services and facilities to benefit those who need help the most. We have an onsite medical clinic that cares for our camp families, takes in patients from the area, and also fills medication and treatment requests we refer to them. Our team of nurses and doctors work diligently to host medical days to quell outbreaks of communicable diseases, provide nutritional support to hospital patients, and visit families in dire need who cannot afford even transport to see a doctor. They are heroes in a collapsing healthcare system. Our medical team recently held complete medical assessments for every resident in the camp. We have patients with amputated legs, shrapnel injuries, quadriplegia, brain damage, cerebral palsy, cardiac conditions, psychological disorders, burns, and more. They all need regular and specific medical care and medication they otherwise would not have access to, but that we of course provide. Support us here: Two weeks ago, the children of Refaat Alareer camp planted some mint and basil in the camp as a way to grow their own food. They also planted a significant amount of molokhya, traditional Palestinian plant that’s turned into a stew. Farming is one of the ways people are trying to survive the famine imposed by the military occupation. Scabies, chickenpox and rashes are widespread in camps due to the lack of access to clean water and medical care. Children are not sleeping from the itching. Support: But now summer vacation is over! Miss Hanan & Miss Mona are back to teaching with their assistant Miss Warda. The joy of the children (and their parents 😅) was indescribable. Children in the camp are having more than a meal a day and we can see life and energy come back into their little bodies. We hope flow of food continues and increases to reasonable amounts. These can be found occasionally in markets and from suppliers at the highest prices we have ever seen due to the scarcity. One can of specialized baby formula can cost up to $125 after cash commission. This is baby Zeinab. She has spent the first months of her life in and out of the hospital. She needs treatment abroad for a medical condition, but in the meantime she needs sustenance for survival. She can only take lactose free milk. The lack of this product in the hospitals and markets makes it impossible for her to eat. She has extreme gastrointestinal distress and she’s losing even more weight. She needs our help. We are searching for the specialized formula for Zainab, and for other babies like her. We need your help. Every single day babies and children are dying from starvation. Those who are particularly vulnerable are in the hospital with illnesses and injuries, but now we are seeing patients admitted solely due to acute and severe malnutrition. The Sameer Project sourced some formula recently in the South, and some nutritional nut butter supplements and fortified cereal supplements in the North and delivered them to Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis. We coordinated with the director of the Pediatric Department to reach the most critical patients. Babies with heart issues and genetic diseases, children with burns and traumatic brain injuries, they all received something to help their little bodies survive. Each can of therapeutic France Lait formula cost an astounding $100, and we managed to secure 50 of them, with a 10% bank transfer fee. The nut butter packet cost between $2-$10.5 each depending on the caloric density, after cash commission fees. And each box of Riri nutritional cereal was for $6 after bank transfer fees. At this point, the situation is so catastrophic that if we find nutritional support like baby formula and supplements we will purchase it on the spot and distribute it within 24 hours maximum. Those who are particularly vulnerable are in the hospital with illnesses and injuries, but now we are seeing patients admitted solely due to acute and severe malnutrition. The Sameer Project sourced some formula recently in the South, and some nutritional nut butter supplements and fortified cereal supplements in the North and delivered them to Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis. We coordinated with the director of the Pediatric Department to reach the most critical patients. Babies with heart issues and genetic diseases, children with burns and traumatic brain injuries, they all received something to help their little bodies survive. Each can of therapeutic France Lait formula cost an astounding $100, and we managed to secure 50 of them, with a 10% bank transfer fee. The nut butter packet cost between $2-$10.5 each depending on the caloric density, after cash commission fees. And each box of Riri nutritional cereal was for $6 after bank transfer fees. At this point, the situation is so catastrophic that if we find nutritional support like baby formula and supplements we will purchase it on the spot and distribute it within 24 hours maximum. The head of the pediatric ward in Nasser Hospital called us at The Sameer Project with an urgent, life saving, request. The neonatal department was almost out of formula, and they needed a supply as soon as possible to feed babies in incubators. When we arrived at the hospital we saw how dire the situation was - one shelf of a refrigerator with about 20 baby bottles in it, enough for only one more feeding each! The occupation still limits the amount of baby formula, especially specific types like neonatal, lactose free, and therapeutic kinds, creating scarcity at the hospitals for Gaza’s most vulnerable. This week, the team provided care and wound change for 20 cases in the camp. Without this care, the wounds could get infected and amputations might be necessary. Support: There is a huge influx of patients at the hospital in Khan Younis due to displacements from the North and the number of malnourished and sick babies being born daily. In a 24 hour period, the pediatric ward had 1,000 patients visit with is 10x the usual number. Mothers, babies, children are sprawled out on the hospital floor because of the overcrowding. The Sameer Project responded by delivering 30 mattresses so that the huge number of cases have somewhere to rest and recover. Each mattress cost $75, with the total coming to $2,239 after 11% commission. We are always glad to be able to support the hospitals that are working so hard to take care of patients. We cannot go back to this - burned and maimed babies, child martyrs, families torn apart. Prior to the ceasefire agreement, in one of the last mass casualty attacks (before today) our medical point in our Sawarha Camp received baby Rosa who had severe facial and upper torso burns from a fire that broke out after an airstrike. Her grandfather, who is one of her primary caretakers was also injured. Since then, the Translating Falasteen (Translating Falasteen (Palestine)) x The Sameer Project medical team has been following up with Rosa for daily wound cleanings and burn debridement. We provided her with medication and burn cream and we are following up with scar cream as well. Thanks to the detailed personal care, weeks later Rosa is healing well and will make a full recovery. Yesterday, the residents of the Refaat Alareer camp had no food just like everyone else in Gaza, and our team went to the markets to try and find anything, donate: Eventually our incredible team found 20 kilos of sweet potatoes. 20 kilos for more than 150 people … Even though the 35 families and our team had to share a small plate, it was like finding a treasure. Each kilo cost $21.25 with 10% commission so a total of $425. For today we found eggplants and the team is going to get it. We hope we close the deal to feed the patients in the Refaat Alareer camp but the situation remains dire.
