Roughing up the interior encourages propolis production. Propolis is antibacterial and anti-fungal and provides an immune system boost to the bees.

"old hollow trees" Dang that's a catchy term, someone should use that for something

It also allows mycelium spores to grow which bees need for their immune system. Normally while in trees certain fungi are living with the bees in a symbiotic relationship. It makes sense to use wood that allows a proper environment for bees.

It mimics natural surfaces and encourages propolis production. We do this to all the new hive bodies we build.

I’ve never heard this, but this absolutely makes sense. We must respect the “Bee-ness” of the Bee.

Probably gives the wax greater adherence. Like how you sand a surface before painting.

Do you build your own boxes. We might have a chance to get a hive gain this year, if my sister can split hers. She's using our old equipment, and im thinking of how best to get the boxes...

I just buy the parts and assemble them.

Definitely makes sense! Question if you have a minute I've wanted to make beehives but find discrepancies from each set of plans. Do you have a particular style of hive you could recommend that is confirmed to be good for the bees? 🫡 TIA

I usually just buy the parts and assemble them. Langstroth style hives.
