From starting the first Computer Science course in IIT Kharagpur in 1971, to STPI to Aadhaar and NPCI we've built this software industry in India from ground up. What was your party doing back then? Trying to obstruct everything and create as many hurdles as possible. Let us remind you that your party declared 1984 as 'anti-computerisation year' and worked towards obstructing the IT sector which was the future. Despite all challenges, we went ahead and did it with the support of vast number of talented engineers of India. Here is a brief history of it. How India Became a Global IT Superpower A few decades ago, India was not known for computers or software. But today, it is one of the biggest IT hubs in the world. Millions of Indians work in the software industry, and companies like Infosys, Wipro, and TCS are global giants. This transformation did not happen overnight. It was the result of important government policies and decisions that started in the 1970s. Let’s go back in time and see how India’s IT journey began. IITs and the Birth of Computer Science Courses (1970s-1980s) India’s famous IITs (Indian Institutes of Technology) started computer science courses in the 1970s and 1980s. IIT Kanpur was one of the first to introduce a Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) program in 1971, with the help of US universities. By the 1980s, almost all IITs and NITs had computer science departments. This was the first step in producing highly skilled software engineers. Many of these graduates went on to work in Silicon Valley or for Indian IT companies. Rajiv Gandhi and the Computer Revolution (1984-1989 In the 1980s, India was not very advanced in technology. Computers were rare, and many people feared that they would take away jobs. But Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi saw the future. He believed that computers would help India grow. With the help of Sam Pitroda, a telecom engineer, he introduced computers in government offices. At first, there was resistance. Many workers protested, fearing job losses. But soon, people realized that computers made work easier and faster. The government also encouraged companies and schools to use computers. In 1988, the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) was set up to build India's own supercomputers. This created excitement around computers, and many young students started taking interest in computer science. The 1986 Software Export Policy – India Opens to the World In 1986, the government introduced a policy to promote software exports. The goal was to make India a hub for IT services. This led to the creation of Software Technology Parks of India (STPI) in 1991, where software companies could work with tax benefits. Foreign companies also started outsourcing their software work to India. Suddenly, there were many job opportunities in IT, and students began choosing computer science as a career. The 1991 Economic Reforms – A Game Changer The biggest turning point came in 1991 when India opened its economy to foreign investment. Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao and Finance Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh introduced economic liberalization. Before 1991, starting a company in India was difficult because of too many government rules. After 1991, foreign companies like IBM and Microsoft entered India, creating more jobs in IT. This encouraged even more students to study computer science. The Y2K Boom – India Saves the World (Late 1990s) In the late 1990s, the world faced a big problem – the Y2K bug. Many old computer programs used two-digit years (e.g., ‘99’ for 1999). People feared that when the year 2000 came, computers might fail. Indian IT companies like Infosys, Wipro, and TCS came to the rescue. They fixed Y2K bugs for global companies. This made India famous as a reliable IT outsourcing destination. After this, many foreign companies started hiring Indian engineers for software work. Mr Gandhi is visiting Germany on the invitation of the Progressive Alliance—an important alliance of 117 progressive parties of the world, of which 30 are in power. He has been invited to the Presidium of the Progressive Alliance, and I believe that his contribution there—as it was at the Bharat Summit, where the Progressive Alliance was delighted to meet with him—will be enormous. We are in an uncertain world. A new world order is emerging, and we are not entirely comfortable with some of its directions. Obviously, there are many imponderables that need to be dealt with. Our relationship with Europe and its relationship with the rest of the world—including within Ukraine and Russia—matter enormously. And of course, our relationship with Europe is not just between political parties but also with the cutting-edge industry there. I got to ask Jensen a question today at CES 2026. Question: What advice would you give to a new robotics founder for them to choose the right application space or the right idea so that they can have the most impact and most differentiation? Jensen's answer (short summary): The real strategic choice is between a horizontal play and a vertical one. Horizontal competition comes from every direction, but focusing on a specific vertical allows you to solve the hardest problems for a specific industry. Whether it’s EMS manufacturing or surgical robotics, that deep domain expertise is very beneficial. Jensen's full answer: Well, first of all, let's take a step back. As you know, NVIDIA, here we were just talking about AI factories. And that AI factory—our contribution, our chips, systems, infrastructure, which is software, and model technology. Is that right? That's kind of the NVIDIA stack. And that's an AI factory. In order to build robotic systems, you really need three different computers. You need the training computer, which I just described. And then you need another computer for doing simulation, because the robot needs to learn how to practice and be evaluated inside a virtual world that's physically precise, so that it doesn't have to do crazy stuff in the physical world while it's still learning. And so we create a virtual world that obeys the laws of physics, and I've demonstrated it several times, and that virtual world is called Omniverse. And so that's a second computer. And that computer is much more like one of our gaming computers, and the GPU that we use for that is RTX Pro. Basically an RTX. And then the third computer is the computer that goes into the robot. It's the robot brain. And that robot computer we call Orin today, and then the next generation is called Thor. And it has its own stack. So Thor has a super-fast inference stack. It runs a safety operating system, like the safety operating system we have in the car, because you want the robot to stay in its guardrails and not do things that it's not confident in doing. And so, you have your stack, and then you have your model. And the model could be fine articulation, manipulation, and locomotion, and each one of those, it could be system one and system two thinking. The technology necessary to build a robot is incredible. And so I just described for you, in order to be a robotics company, you have to have three computers. You have to understand all three stacks, and you have to build this robotic system, not to mention all the electronics and the mechanicals necessary to do it. It's incredibly hard. However, as you know, these pieces of technology independently have been coming together. Isn't that right? Which is really what happens to a new industry, is when there's enabling technology necessary for the industry itself, but it rides on the contributions of the technology advances in other industry that it doesn't have to worry about. And so the humanoid industry is riding on the work of the AI factories we're building for other mainstream stuff and other AI stuff. And our Omniverse was designed for other applications and different other digital twin capabilities. And so all this stuff is now coming together. The question is for robotics, ultimately, it comes down to a couple of different questions. Do you want to be a horizontal company, or do you want to be a vertically domain-specific company? The benefit of a horizontal company, of course, is that you less worry about the application, you more worry about the technology, and if you succeed, your scale can be quite large. However, horizontal plays are incredibly hard. Your competition comes from every single direction. Now, on domain, if you want to be domain-specific, then you're going to have to understand the particular application quite deeply. So maybe it's something to do with EMS manufacturing, assembly of these AI supercomputers. Maybe it's related to building cars in factories. Whatever the reasons are, your domain expertise—could be surgical robots—domain expertise could really be a benefit. My preference usually—and you asked, so I'll offer—my preference tends to be to go find verticals, but that's kind of my preference. Some companies, some leaders just would prefer to build horizontal capability, and that's fine, too.

But as I complete this second mission living and working in space, what draws me to this job is the people. Experiences like this are amazing, but the relationships we build that make it possible are the “why.” Every day, this mission depends on people from all over the world, of different nationalities, races, religions, and cultures. It depends on government and commercial entities, it depends on all political parties, and it depends on commitment to an unchanged goal over many years and decades. It depends on people dedicated to being part of something bigger than themselves, whose names may never be known but who wake up every day to make the world a better place and to be part of something they will be proud to tell their grandkids about. History will look kindly upon them. Humans have always had a propensity to explore … across lands and oceans, up mountains, and into the sky. We as a species will never stop wondering what else is out there, and what it would be like to go. In 1997 the greatest chess player who ever lived sat down against a machine, lost, and immediately accused it of cheating. IBM's answer was to switch the machine off, take it apart, and refuse to ever play him again. The match was carried on live television. IBM's market value jumped by billions in a single week. The man who lost spent years asking one question the company would never answer. His name is Garry Kasparov. The machine was Deep Blue. The footage is on YouTube. Kasparov was not just a champion. He had been the world's number one for more than fifteen years and is still argued to be the strongest player in history. In 1996 he had beaten IBM's Deep Blue with ease. IBM took it away, rebuilt it, and challenged him again in 1997 in New York, with the whole world watching. Then, in game two, the machine did something that broke him. In a position where every computer of that era would have greedily grabbed a pawn, Deep Blue quietly declined and played a slow, patient, deeply human move instead. Kasparov could not accept that a machine had chosen it. He became convinced a human grandmaster was hidden somewhere, feeding it moves. Rattled, he resigned a game that analysts later proved he could have drawn. He never recovered in the match. Deep Blue won, three and a half to two and a half. It was the first time a reigning world champion had ever lost a match to a computer. The papers called it the day the machines arrived. Kasparov demanded to see the machine's logs, the record of why it played what it played. IBM refused to release them, turned down the rematch he begged for, and quietly dismantled Deep Blue. Years later one of its own engineers admitted that an early move which had unnerved Kasparov may have come from nothing more than a bug, a meaningless fallback the champion had mistaken for genius. Nobody could ever fully settle it. The logs stayed private. This is not really a story about chess. It is about the exact moment human intuition stopped being the ceiling. For centuries the best move in any hard game was whatever the finest human mind could see. In one match a machine found a move a human could not even believe was real, and the greatest mind in the game turned his own genius into paranoia against it. Kasparov spent years bitter about it. Then he said the line that outlived the grudge: "I could feel, I could smell, a new kind of intelligence across the table." He stopped fighting the machine and started studying how humans and machines win together. That, not the loss, was the real lesson. The edge moved that day and it never moved back. It used to be intuition. It became computation. The people who win from here are not the ones with the best gut. They are the ones who stopped trusting their gut the moment the machine could out-see it. The film is free. The logs never came out. Most people will only remember that the human lost.

Time and its manner of repeating appear as themes in art and metaphysics through the ages. Heraclitus steps into and out of a river, a new man each time while history draws irregular spiral loops, rhyming and stuttering out its story. At its core, Cycles is a network artwork deployed on Ethereum. It comprises an abstract kinetic sculpture of rotating rings, composed of 512 individual lenses. Each lens represents a unique simulation, moving through parametric space and offering viewers a window into complex, evolving patterns. By using Ethereum as a networked computer, the artwork can develop over time and accept interactions via the network. Importantly, the core of Cycles isn't just a JavaScript file loaded and stored on Ethereum, but instead a program running live on Ethereum itself as a world computer sculpture. Using blockchain technology as material for art making offers artists the chance to make artworks that are new in the context of art history: those that continuously evolve, record their own history, and run autonomously with minimal intervention. Leveraging Ethereum's distributed nature and economic incentives, Cycles aspires to operate on an extended time scale allowing viewers to live with and experience its changes over years, decades or centuries. Cycles is a dynamically running network artwork. This distinction is important because in the history of computer-generated art, many artists have focused on designing computer systems to generate outputs such as drawings, videos, or sound recordings. This is a respectable tradition but this approach fails to express the dynamic and interactive nature of computer programs as artworks themselves. Cycles attempts to explore these qualities by creating a dynamic network artwork that runs continuously and autonomously on Ethereum, shifting the focus from the product of an art-making algorithm to the system itself. Dynamism is a prerequisite for interactivity which Cycles allows for its collectors. The piece includes a method to stop a lens’ movement by freezing it. This causes the lens to focus continuously on the same point in space, causing the changing qualities of its simulation to be fixed and allowing collectors to control its aesthetic presentation. Freezing is a weighted decision. Once a lens is frozen it will require certain conditions to be unlocked. Methods for unfreezing lenses will be unlocked over time. The fact that the behavior of the sculpture can be affected by lens owners means that its future state is non-deterministic and will never be able to be fully predicted. In technical terms, Cycles is composed of Solidity, JavaScript, and SVG code, stored and computed on the Ethereum blockchain. This design avoids external dependencies, ensuring the artwork's longevity and resistance to technical failures. While the current form of Cycles is complete, its nature as a software artwork allows for potential future development through non-destructive updates or connections to other systems. By rendering systemic processes as aesthetic experiences, Cycles offers viewers a unique perspective on the passage of time and the nature of change. It invites contemplation of the cyclical yet varied patterns that characterize both natural and human systems. As viewers engage with Cycles over extended periods, they are encouraged to reflect on their own relationship with time, change, and recurrence, viewing the artwork as a lens through which to observe the interplay of repetition and variation that shapes our existence.

Eric Schmidt, former CEO of Google, offers a sobering view: The biggest technological shift in human history is happening, and almost no one is talking about it. We call that super intelligence or ASI… computers that are smarter than the sum of humans. The San Francisco consensus is this occurs within six years." And here's where Schmidt sounds the alarm. The conversation isn't keeping pace with the technology: "This path is not understood in our society. There's no language for what happens with the arrival of this. This is happening faster than our human that our society, our democracy, our laws will address." His closing thought captures why this matters: "That's why it's underhyped. People do not understand what happens when you have intelligence at this level which is largely free."

Over the years, I’ve worked with hundreds of brilliant partners – and indeed occasionally those we’d label as adversaries – across dozens of countries, tackling weapons proliferation and terrorism. During my time at MI5, I saw close up what it takes to defend Britain from being targeted by hostile states. You’ll find many like me in my organisation: powerfully motivated to protect our precious country; curious about how our world is changing, joining dots and taking action, across domains. But it was in my last role as ‘Q’, where it was my job to turn emerging technologies from threats to opportunities that I could most see the world changing. As I dug deep into data and extraordinary innovation, I could see how technology was rapidly reshaping not just our capabilities but also conflict and trust, truth and global power. Let me lay out how I see the global issues MI6 must tackle. Because the greatest danger we face is to misunderstand the nature of the problem. Let’s be in no doubt. Our world is more dangerous and contested now than it has been for decades. Conflict is evolving and trust eroding, just as new technologies spur both competition and dependence. We are being contested from sea to space, from the battlefield to the boardroom. And even our brains, as disinformation manipulates our understanding of each other and ourselves. Across the globe, we are now confronting not one single danger, but an interlocking web of security challenges – military, technological, social, ethical even – each shaping the other in complex ways. We are now operating in a space between peace and war. This is not a temporary state or a gradual, inevitable evolution. Our world is being actively remade, with profound implications for national and international security. Institutions which were designed in the ashes of the Second World War are being challenged. New blocs and identities forming and alliances reshaping. Multipolar competition in tension with multilateral cooperation. But there’s something distinctive that will make this change unlike any other: the impact of advanced technologies, which will accelerate the pace and scale of every threat and opportunity, and increasingly, individualise them too. Advances in artificial intelligence, biotechnology, and quantum computing are not only revolutionising economies but rewriting the reality of conflict, as they ‘converge’ to create science-fiction-like tools. There’s incredible promise in all this for all of us, from green technologies to hyper-personalised medicine. But also peril. AI-powered robots and drones are brilliant for scaled manufacturing but devastating on the battlefield. Discoveries that cure disease can also create new weapons. And as states race for tech supremacy, or as some algorithms become as powerful as states, those hyper-personalised tools could become a new vector for conflict and control. Power itself is becoming more diffuse, more unpredictable as control over these technologies is shifting from states to corporations, and sometimes to individuals. And at the same time, the foundations of trust in our societies are eroding. Information, once a unifying force, is increasingly weaponised. Falsehood spreads faster than fact, dividing communities and distorting reality. We live in an age of hyper-connection yet profound isolation. The algorithms flatter our biases and fracture our public squares. And as trust collapses, so does our shared sense of truth – one of the greatest losses a society can suffer. The defining challenge of the twenty-first century is not simply who wields the most powerful technologies, but who guides them with the greatest wisdom. Our security, our prosperity, and our humanity depend on it. Our world is being remade. And for the first time, we are all at the heart of it. My Service must now operate in this new context too: not just expert on hostile states, terrorism, proliferation and more, but also fluent in technology, able to anticipate the second and third order effects of advances that reshape the world in minutes not months. And as China will be a central part of the global transformation taking place this century, it is essential that we, as MI6, continue to inform the government’s understanding of China’s rise and the implications for UK national security. I’m going to break with tradition and won’t give you a global threat tour, but will focus here on Putin’s Russia. We all continue to face the menace of an aggressive, expansionist and revisionist Russia, seeking to subjugate Ukraine and harass NATO. I find it harrowing that hundreds of thousands have died, with the toll mounting every day, because of Putin’s historical distortions and his compromised desire for respect. He is dragging out negotiations and shifting the cost of war onto his own population. But Putin should be in no doubt, our support is enduring. The pressure we apply on Ukraine’s behalf will be sustained. Because it is fundamental not just to European sovereignty and security but to global stability. Alongside the grinding war, Russia is testing us in the grey zone with tactics that are just below the threshold of war. It’s important to understand their attempts to bully, fearmonger and manipulate, because it affects us all. I am talking about: Cyberattacks on critical infrastructure. Drones buzzing airports and bases. Aggressive activity in our seas, above and below the waves. State-sponsored arson and sabotage. Propaganda and influence operations that crack open and exploit fractures within societies. Countering this activity is the work of intelligence and security services across Europe and the globe. And as the Foreign Secretary made clear in a speech last week, the UK is defending itself against this Russian information warfare – sanctioning Russian media outlets pushing Kremlin narratives. The export of chaos is a feature not a bug in this Russian approach to international engagement; and we should be ready for this to continue until Putin is forced to change his calculus. So, how should we respond? It’s not enough now just to understand the world. We must shape it too. MI6 is well-positioned to respond to these threats and wider global instability. And we will continue to evolve, just as we have throughout our long history. The UK government has invested in our intelligence agencies and we are all using our unique powers to keep the British people safe. Our ‘open and connected’ partnerships across the UK Intelligence Community, with HMGCC, NSSIF and the wider tech ecosystem in the UK will become even more important – because in the digital battleground, no single organisation can prevail alone. As a global agency, MI6’s inbuilt strength is our partners and our people. The risks I have set out require us to work ever more closely with our colleagues in MI5, GCHQ and in defence and diplomacy. But also with our Five Eyes partners, with the E3, the EU, NATO, those across the Middle East, the Indo-Pacific and beyond. And with many valued partners whose identity needs to remain secret. Together, we integrate our diverse talent, data and tools to meet the threat. AI is a domain in which we will excel, using the technology to augment, not replace, our human skills. Every digital trace, every byte of data, every algorithmic decision has implications for the safety of the lives of the courageous people who work with us as officers and agents, and for the UK’s strategic advantage. Mastery of technology will infuse everything we do. Not just in our labs, but in the field, in our tradecraft, and even more importantly, in the mindset of every officer. We will become as comfortable with lines of code as we are with human sources, as fluent in Python as we are in multiple other languages. Under my leadership, MI6 will continue to attract Britain’s best and most creative minds: linguists and data scientists, case officers and engineers, behavioural experts and technologists. We need people who walk in the shoes and get in the heads of our adversaries. We need people who think differently, challenge assumptions, and act decisively. All can thrive and make a difference at MI6. At an operational level, we will sharpen our edge and impact with audacity, tapping into – if you like – our historical SOE instincts. We’re at our best when we’re hustling to make things happen, because our intelligence is most valuable when it changes reality on the ground. We will take calculated risks, where the prize is significant and the national interest clear. We will never stoop to the tactics of our opponents. But we must seek to outplay them. In every domain. In every way. So intelligence must drive action. Action must deliver advantage. And advantage must serve Britain’s security and prosperity. But at the core, our deeper contribution is also our simplest – how we unlock human agency. Our fast-paced, tech and threat-infused world now generates more heat than light. As nations retrench and rearm, we are losing opportunities to listen to what’s really going on. I’ve seen time and again throughout my career, that this is where MI6 matters most: we listen and we hear. We understand, because we take time to learn languages and cultures, complex technical and historical detail, immerse ourselves in what’s really driving the situation. Across the globe, right now, our officers are finding people with the courage to step forward, and they are taking time to sit and listen to break these tightening cycles of violence. They listen for nuance, for connection, for opportunity. Over the years, I’ve listened to terrorists who have told us how to defuse the bomb because they know that more violence won’t help. To proliferators and smugglers who’ve told us where to find the dangerous material, motivated to protect their children’s future. To people trapped in authoritarian regimes who know, deep down, that their humanity is being chipped away – and that telling us what’s really going on is an important release, allowing us all to find better ways to navigate our changing world. So, we will work with our agents. And we will continue to engage directly, and with respect, with states and organisation currently working against us. Away from the glare of the media, we will use MI6’s convening power wherever we can to make a material difference, bringing parties together to defuse tensions. But the response to the increasing risks we face won’t be delivered by the UK intelligence community alone. Wider society has a role to play too. That includes work taking place in schools across the country so our children don’t get duped by information manipulation. Let’s all check sources, consider evidence, and be alive to those algorithms that trigger intense reactions, like fear. It also means everyone in society really understanding the world we are in – a world where terrorists plot against us, where our enemies fearmonger, bully and manipulate, and the front line is everywhere. Online, on our streets, in our supply chains, in the minds and on the screens of our citizens. We must all stand together against this. As we do today with our friends in Australia after the shocking antisemitic terrorist attack this weekend. My thoughts -and those of my whole organisation – are with the family, friends and loved ones of the victims. Light will always win over darkness. In rising to meet these challenges we, in MI6, will remain anchored to our values: courage, creativity, respect and integrity. And to our principles: accountability and trust are not constraints on our work; they are the foundations of our legitimacy with the British public. Recently, I had the privilege of meeting and thanking a foreign agent who has worked with us for decades, taking extraordinary risks to help keep the UK safe. I asked why. They said simply, ‘Your values. Your integrity and respect. None of us have a future without them’. This moment reinforced to me that we must remain a very human agency. And so, to sustain that trust, MI6 will continue to be more open. Not for the sake of visibility, but because it matters – and as my MI5 counterpart Sir Ken McCallum said recently - because it is a strength. We will continue the practice of speaking publicly, broaden our channels of engagement, and sustain our focus on attracting the most diverse talent to join our Service. Transparency does not mean revealing what must remain secret. It means showing the British people who we are, what we stand for, and why our work matters. We need your trust and support for the difficult and often dangerous work our agents pursue, every day of the year. In an age of uncertainty, one constant remains: the choices made by human beings still determine the shape of the world. Yes, technology can illuminate possibilities: but information requires judgement; complexity demands clarity; and only people can decide which path to follow. The United Kingdom’s global voice has never rested solely on strength – it has rested on trust, principle, and the ability to understand others as well as ourselves. That is also the essence of intelligence: not simply knowing the world, but interpreting it through a uniquely human lens. Ours is the quiet service, the hidden service. It is one rooted in a profound belief that when human beings act with purpose and integrity, they can steady a faltering world. When the Berlin Wall fell, it was our shared belief in freedom that carried Europe forward. When acts of terror targeted open societies, it was intelligence, cooperation and resolve that preserved them. And when adversaries blur fact and falsehood, our task is to defend the space where truth can still stand. As we step into the future, the tools at our disposal will evolve. But what will always matter most is the human element – the person who stands in the shadows and says: this is right, and that is wrong. That choice – the exercise of human agency – has shaped our world before, and it will shape it again. Because in the end, it is not what we can do that defines us, but what we choose to do. During the episode released on July 3, Rogan added that he feared God 'is actually created by human beings creating this infinitely intelligent thing that can essentially harness all of the available energy and power of the universe and create anything it wants.' Yampolskiy even contended that many of the religions around the world have one thing in common: 'What they all agree on is that there is [a] super intelligence which created a fake world.' The theory that all life exists within a computer simulation has been debated for decades, and it's even been entertained in blockbuster movies like 'The Matrix.' While Rogan suggested that deepfakes of Bigfoot, UFOs, and other impossible images could be proof we're living in a virtual reality, scientists have argued that there is more basic evidence that this world is not real. Melvin Vopson, an associate professor in physics at the University of Portsmouth, has argued that gravity may be a sign that we're all living in a virtual simulation. According to Vopson's new paper in AIP Advances, our universe is the 'ultimate computer' and gravity's pull on Earth and in outer space is the computer trying to keep its vast amount of data organized. As for who's running the simulation, Yampolskiy explained that one possibility is life as we know it could simply be a replay of past events being examined by the future human race. Rogan then asked Yampolskiy why an all-powerful AI would even bother creating a reality for our consciousnesses to exist in. Yampolskiy explained that it's impossible to know who is controlling this program, whether it's an alien intelligence, humans from the future, or an AI super intelligence has already been built and is running these simulations by itself. Therefore, it's also impossible to know why people would be needed in the virtual world, adding that he and Rogan could have had the same interview thousands of times and never knew it was happening. 'Is it entertainment? Is it scientific experimentation? Is it marketing? Maybe somebody managed to control them and [are] trying to figure out what Starbucks coffee sells best. And they need to run [an] earth-sized simulation to see what sells best,' Yampolskiy explained. 'Think about this decade... We're about to invent intelligence and virtual worlds, God-like inventions. We're here. There's a good chance that's not just random,' the AI researcher added, suggesting we're already stuck in a computer simulation. For the past 15 months Dusty put up a courageous battle against brain cancer and while it’s sad to know he is no longer with us, all of us at Rewind could not be more proud of the fight he showed by not only exceeding the normal 3-month life expectancy he was given during his initial diagnosis, but he actually made it back to call the High School Basketball Championships earlier this year. Dusty not only was an ambassador for high school sports, he became the true voice for all of the big moments across the state while never shining the spotlight away from the athletes. When Rewind was formed, the premise behind our coverage was to be the outlet that covered the state the right way and for the right reasons. It was our goal from day 1 to always be the group that was approachable, cared about the under dogs, and always remained positive in our coverage. None of those would have been possible without Dusty’s humility, passion, and willingness to simply lend his voice to the moment instead of making the moment about anything else. While we know there is solace in knowing he is no longer hurting, our hearts hurt for Dusty’s wife Megan and for their kids. Furthermore, even if they trained a model like this, the ability to deploy it at scale matters. If you had a cyber hacker, it's much more dangerous if they have a million of them versus a thousand of them. Jensen: Your premise is just wrong. The fact of the matter is their AI development is going just fine. The best AI researchers in the world, because they are limited in compute, also come up with extremely smart algorithms. DeepSeek is not an inconsequential advance. The day that DeepSeek comes out on Huawei first, that is a horrible outcome for our nation. Dwarkesh: Currently, you can have a model like DeepSeek that can run on any accelerator if it's open source. Why would that stop being the case in the future? Jensen: Suppose it optimizes for Huawei. Suppose it optimizes for their architecture. It would put others at a disadvantage. As AI diffuses out into the rest of the world, their standards and their tech stack will become superior to ours because their models are open. Dwarkesh: Tesla sold extremely good electric vehicles to China for a long time. iPhones are sold in China. They didn't cause some lock-in. China will still make their version of EVs, and they're dominating, or smartphones, they're dominating. Jensen: We are not a car. The fact that I can buy this car brand one day and use another car brand another day is easy. Computing is not like that. There's a reason why x86 still exists. There's a reason why Arm is so sticky. These ecosystems are hard to replace. Dwarkesh: It's just hard to imagine that there's a long-term lock-in to the Chinese ecosystem, even if they have this slightly better open-source model for a while. American labs port across accelerators constantly. Anthropic's models are run on GPUs, they're run on Trainium, they're run on TPUs. There are so many things you can do, from distilling to a model that's well fit for your chips. Jensen: China is the largest contributor to open source software in the world. China's the largest contributor to open models in the world. Today it's built on the American tech stack, Nvidia’s. Fact. All five layers of the tech stack for AI are important. The United States ought to go win all five of them. in a few years time, I'm making you the prediction that when we want American technology to be diffused around the world—out to India, out to the Middle East, out to Africa, out to Southeast Asia—on that day, I will tell you exactly about today's conversation, about how your policy ... caused the United States to concede the second largest market in the world for no good reason at all.
