Dagestani Police Detain Woman For Wearing Niqab A Muslim woman working in a coffee shop in Makhachkala was detained by police for wearing the Niqab. The woman was taken away from her workplace and taken to the local police station to establish her identity. In recent months, police in #Dagestan have been inspecting the streets and detaining women wearing the Niqab. This is a direct consequence of the 2024 fatwa by the so called Muftiate of Dagestan, Akhmad Abdulaev, who banned the wearing of Niqabs.

Even an elected local councilor claimed that those inside had guns, while the protesters only carried sticks. “They fired on the protesters,” he said. Now, with a young protester gunned down by police, the victims say they cannot even register a protest. “If we do,” he added, “they open fire on us and register FIRs against us.
