Ravi Tamta has been in the news for the past few days after his flying vehicle prototype took its first flight from Almora. Since the video went viral, many people have started comparing it with similar flying vehicle prototypes already developed in China and other countries. And yes, the idea of personal flying vehicles is not new. But perhaps that misses the point. Ravi comes from Kaflikhan, a small village in Almora, and has a degree in Arts. His father is a traditional craftsman. This is not the kind of background where access to technology, resources and specialised knowledge automatically comes with the package. Yet he chose to build. Whether the prototype eventually becomes a successful flying vehicle is a different question. Its engineering should be tested, questioned and improved. But the fact that someone from a small village in Uttarakhand decided to take on an idea far bigger than his circumstances deserves recognition. China may have built similar machines before. That doesn’t make Ravi’s attempt meaningless. Sometimes the bigger achievement is simply having the courage to look at something that seems impossible and say, “I will try.”

The device used to conceal the registration number was also removed from the vehicle in the presence of officials from Flying Squad No. 5 of the Pimpri-Chinchwad RTO.
