Ben Horowitz: Every founder experiences doubt — even Mark Zuckerberg “Congratulations on betting on yourself,” a16z co-founder Ben Horowitz tells an audience full of founders. “Your job is to make your bet payoff. You believed in yourself enough to do it, and there are going to be many times when you question that bet. But that gets you nothing.” Ben offers the following advice: “You just have to do your thing, keep going, and focus on what you can do. The doubts are going to be there, but ignore the doubts. Patrick Collison on the importance of waiting a really long time to hire people Everybody tells you “work really hard to hire the best people.” But as Patrick explains, that’s not helpful because everyone knows they should do that. As he puts it: “The question is to what length should you go and what does that actually mean in practice? And in practice, it means being okay waiting a really long time to hire people.” It took Stripe six months to hire their first two people, and six more months to hire another 3-4 people. He can think of five people at Stripe who took 3+ years to hire. “If you think about the smartest people you know, if you want to get them to work on your thing, chances are they already have pretty good paths ahead of them… You have to be way more persistent and be okay with it taking way longer than any sane or reasonable person would think it should take.” There’s an important compounding effect here — hiring just one great person will make it marginally easier to get the next great person. Patrick argues you should also view every person you hire as bringing along another 50 people just like them if your company is successful: “Even if they don’t literally hire 50 people, they will be so influential in determining the selection of those 50 people.” Source: Greylock Partners (Nov 2015)

Ben Horowitz: “Do not expect life to be fair. It will only defeat you.” The Andreessen Horowitz co-founder is asked for advice that he has found useful in his own life. Ben responds: “The thing that I would say has had the biggest effect on me is something my father said to me years ago: ‘Life isn’t fair.’ That advice seems really simple, but the thing I’ve seen that defeats people more than any other thing in life is the expectation of some fairness.” He continues: “There are all kinds of things that are going to happen to you that don’t happen to other people and are completely unfair. But it doesn’t matter because that’s the way it is. And as soon as you can get that idea out of your mind [that life should be fair], you can just deal with it… ‘What should I do now?’ is the real question — not ‘How do I go back and get people to be fair?’… Life’s not fair. Sam Altman: “Most founders get delegation wrong” “People get delegation wrong one way or the other. Every founder knows that as you scale the company, you need to delegate. But they either do way too much or way too little. And it’s actually quite difficult to do it the right balance.” Most founders Sam saw at Y Combinator would delegate too little because they got burned once early on and it took them a long time to trust that delegation can work again. But, as Sam explains, founders can also delegate too much: “Their board member tells them, ‘Hey, you’ve got to delegate. You need these five VPs for these five areas.’ And probably whatever is the area that you think is most important to the business and you enjoy the most, you shouldn’t hire the VP in that area. You should just do it yourself. If you’re a product person and you really love product, don’t hire a VP of product. Keep doing that. Integrity, honesty, and so forth - everybody has them in certain situations. But that’s not the question. The question is if it’s going to cost you your company, do you have your integrity? Palmer Luckey’s advice for founder-led communications “My advice to people would probably be to recognize that the value of your reputation is very high,” Anduril founder Palmer Luckey begins. “If people do not trust you; if they do not believe in what you’re saying; if they do not think that you’re a person worth listening to, they’re going to have a hard time working with you.” Palmer also argues that founders don’t need to be neutral: “You don’t need to be neutral. You can be a propagandist. You can advocate for a particular point of view . . .
