About two decades ago, I got involved with helping persecuted practitioners of #FalunGong escape #China through an underground railroad to Bangkok, a route which passed through the treacherous Golden Triangle. It was bewildering to see the extent to which the Chinese regime was obsessed with this group of peaceful... meditators, which was evident in the number of apparent CCP spies I saw trying to influence them. At the same time, I was stunned by the incredible tenacity of these practitioners, who would rather risk their lives than sign a piece of paper denouncing their faith. Wanting to tell their stories is a big part of what brought me to The Epoch Times originally. Today, it's exactly 25 years since the CCP launched the persecution of Falun Gong. The then-dictator Jiang Zemin vowed to "eradicate" Falun Gong within 3 months. But things turned out very differently from what he intended. And it's perhaps one of the greatest untold stories of our time. In the years that followed, despite facing imprisonment, forced labor, gruesome torture, and even forced organ harvesting—which The Epoch Times first exposed in 2006—Falun Gong practitioners in China would mount the largest civil disobedience and information freedom movement in modern Chinese history. It's estimated that millions of Falun Gong adherents in China not only continue to practice Falun Gong, but they run something to the order of 200,000 underground family print shops that make DVDs, brochures, booklets, and pen drives with firewall-busting software to distribute to their fellow Chinese, so they can finally access true and uncensored information.show more

To understand why the CCP is so determined to eradicate a peaceful spiritual movement known as Falun Gong is to understand Communism. Communism is a religion and a cult. As so, it regards all other religions and ideology as threats to its power and supremacy. To CCP’s dismay, after 25 year of heavy-handed persecution, Falun Gong not only survived but continues to grow!

There has been a major uptick in the CCP’s persecution of Christians in China. And history shows what often comes next. The CCP uses dehumanizing rhetoric to target groups it wants the broader population to see as less than human and eventually accept horrific treatment against. We have already seen this pattern with Uyghurs and Falun Gong practitioners, the two groups most heavily targeted by China’s kill to order forced organ harvesting industry. Dehumanization is not random rhetoric in China. It is often the precursor to imprisonment, persecution, and far worse.

There has been a major uptick in the CCP’s persecution of Christians in China. And history shows what often comes next. "China is at war with faith. It is a war they will not win," says Ambassador Sam Brownback in a powerful testimony on the CCP's obsessive persecution of all genuinely independent faiths. "Religious freedom… is an existential threat to them. For us, it's a foundational principle." Excerpts (machine transcript): "Why this is taking place? Why does China invest billions of dollars each year to oppress religion? And it's not just Christians and it's not just Muslims, it's everybody. It's everybody. It's Tibetan Buddhists, it's Falun Gong. And I would argue Falun Gong get the worst of all of it as a domestic indigenous religion. I put Falun Gong in the category of this is what grandma taught us. She taught us this type of faith, and the people rapidly went to it, and it scared the Chinese Communist Party, and they thought, we can't control these guys. We've got to kill them. Thus, you have three ongoing genocides in China right now, of religious communities: the Tibetan Buddhists—certainly a cultural genocide, if it isn't a genocide; the Uyghurs—it has been classified as a genocide, the Muslim Uyghurs, and it's really not the Uyghurs themselves who are the problem, it's the Muslims in the Uyghurs, and they're trying to— they're fine with Uyghur culture, it's not the answering to a higher authority that Islam is. And then Falun Gong, who, I'd say, gets the hardest of all of it. Why are they doing this? The Chinese communists have to control people, and they find that the people that will stand up to them are people that are answering to a higher authority than the government. It's a very simple thing. It's a very clear problem that communism has had from its very outset. It's a very clear problem that communism has attacked from its very outset in the most horrific, aggressive ways possible. I think, then, that one of our clear responses to this should be to back people of faith. For China, religious freedom is an existential threat. And here, I'm quoting my coach here and saying this: this is an existential threat to them. For us, it's a foundational principle. You can't operate a free and open democracy without having religious freedom, with the people themselves being able to do that. And so we should stand up for who we are, and we should stand up against what China is doing, and we should be doing it very clearly. Let me give you some quick examples of what we should do in the brief time that I have. Number one: within the last two weeks, the head of Zion Church was arrested, Ezra Mingri was arrested, along with a number of other pastors in that network. These guys are hostages. This wasn't done just willy nilly; they just didn't find out about this. The Chinese Communist Party has known about this group for some period of time, and I think in building up to the meeting between Xi and President Trump, what's taking place here is they're grabbing more trading material. These are hostages that they've taken. We should demand that they be released. We should stand up for these other faith communities and stand up with these other faith communities. We should stand up for and with the Tibetan Buddhists. The Secretary of State, the Vice President, the President should fly to see the Dalai Lama in Dharamsala, India, and meet with him and say, "We want to stand with the Tibetan people." I think we should endorse the "third way" that the Tibetan Buddhists have put forward, where they would have an independent country within China. I don't think China is going to allow that, but I think we should stand up for it. I think we should stand up and advocate for the Uyghurs to be released from the forced labor camps that they are in. I think we should stand up for the Christians who are being captured, taken captive, put in horrific circumstances and conditions, and demand their release. And I think we should stand up for the Falun Gong. The writer and founder of Falun Gong, Li Hongzhi, lives in the United States now. He sought asylum here. I think people in the White House should meet with him and declare that they should have religious freedom—and they should have it now. A final point on this—and I could go on a long time, I've written a book on this, on China's war on faith. It will come out next year. I hope people follow it. This should move from being just a human rights issue to a national security issue. For us, religious freedom is the most potent, powerful tool that we have. It stands for our basic values. It stands as a complete threat to Communist China. The most organized domestic group inside of China that could stand up to the regime are people of faith, and they have been persecuted for decades. They have been slaughtered and killed for decades. The Chinese Communist Party has killed more of its own people than any other regime in the history of mankind, and nobody else is even close. They have done this, and they've got three genocides going on now. What would be more important? The guy that was the head, at one point in time, for the Tibetans in exile, once told me, "Either the world will change China, or China will change the world." And we are really at that kind of moment. I always laugh anymore when they say, "These are foreign religions." The real carpetbagger in China is communism—that's what was developed in the European industrial age and goes over to China. It's the one that doesn't fit. If you want to get authentic China, do what the Falun Gong want—they just want to take it back to a cultural civilization that China was for thousands of years. If you want to get rid of carpetbaggers, do that. And so that is just such a canard. It's just such a lie. But they continue to hoist it, I guess, to try to convince the Chinese people or that this is the only answer that they've got. Clearly, I think we should be meeting with these religious leaders to support them. As I mentioned, we should meet with the founder of Falun Gong in the White House; invite him and say, "Look, we just want to recognize this." Meet with the Dalai Lama: the President, the Vice President, Secretary of State—endorse his "third way." Meet with these Christians. Bring a group of people who have been persecuted for their faith into the White House, and have President Trump meet with them and just have them tell their stories. And then I would take that group on tour in Europe and have them just tell their stories—this is what's happened to us, what has happened over decades, and why. Because they have to suppress the religious people, and the religious people are the first ones they'll attack, and they'll be the last ones left standing."
