Dangote’s Kenya Refinery Could Shift Power in East Africa For decades, East Africa has depended on fuel refined thousands of kilometers away, leaving the region exposed to global oil shocks, shipping costs, foreign-exchange pressures, and decisions made outside the continent. That is why Dangote’s reported plan to build a 650,000-barrel-per-day refinery in Kenya matters. If it happens, this will not just be about petrol and diesel. A refinery of that scale could support aviation fuel, petrochemicals, lubricants, plastics feedstock, fertilizer inputs, and other products critical to industrial growth. It could also reduce import dependence, create skilled jobs, support manufacturing and agriculture, and keep more value within the region. Most importantly, it challenges the old economic model in which Africa exports raw materials and imports finished products at a higher cost. East Africa does not only need access to fuel. It needs control over the systems that produce, process, and distribute it. This is what economic sovereignty looks like.

We have visa regulations left, right and centre. Twenty-seven countries in Europe today with 430 million people removed visas. We still have visas. Let me persuade us that it is time we in this continent realise that having visa restrictions amongst ourselves is working against us. When people cannot travel, businesspeople cannot travel, entrepreneurs cannot travel, we all become net losers. I am very happy that now we are moving in the direction of eliminating visas amongst ourselves. Let me say this. As Kenya🇰🇪, by the end of this year, no African will be required to have a visa to come to Kenya.
