Today's e-petition debate about banning Halal slaughter began with Liberal Democrat MP, Jamie Stone confining opposition to no-stun slaughter on animal welfare grounds only. Why can we not oppose these barbaric practices on the grounds that the tradition is alien to Britain? Abstract animal welfare concerns are a weak argument, because unfurling that logic leads one to have to oppose eating animals at all. We should ban Halal slaughter because it offends our culture and sensibilities. It's not how we do things in Britain. That's a good enough reason.
