@MrsApostate ‘Low basses’ is a very Russian tradition. Many Russian liturgy composers used them- Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff. This was a result of westernization during the enlightenment. Symphony, Opera & ballet. The website Musica Russica highlights those hymns w/ ‘no low basses.’
