The Constitution does not even mention parties. Jackson and Van Buren built the modern Democratic Party in the 1820s. The Republican Party entered Congress after 1854 and, with the Democrats, has been the two-party pair there since the mid-1850s. We have been living with the consequences ever since.

Thanks for the historical reminder. How this got "fixed" as a "tradition," as a policy, as a principle . . . and why it "has to" exist now is beyond me.
