My heart goes out to Charlie Kirk's family. This is a tragic shooting and from all appearances, it is an act of political violence. Political violence is on the rise and it is a sign of crisis and weakness in a democracy. I condemn all forms of political violence. We all must take responsibility for working to end it, to secure our democracy and to promote peace and strength in our nation and beyond.

🚨 BREAKING - JD VANCE FUMES AFTER ICE SHOOTING: "That starts, unfortunately, at the very top of the Democratic Party! If you want to stop political violence, stop attacking our law enforcement as the GESTAPO." "If you want to stop political violence, stop telling your supporters that everybody who disagrees with you is a NAZI." "If you want to stop political violence, look in the MIRROR. That's the way that we stop political violence in this country." "And they said that immigration enforcement, you know what they said? That immigration enforcement had detained a 5-year-old autistic girl in order to get to that girl's father. Turned out that story was a complete fabrication. It was a complete dishonest lie. But when you go around and lie about our law enforcement and you tell them that they're mistreating 5-year-old girls, what do you think is going to happen?" "When Democratic politicians encourage doxxing, when they encourage us to unmask ICE enforcement officers, what do you think is going to happen?" "When the mayor of Los Angeles encourages violent protesters to get in the face of our law enforcement, what do you think is going to happen?" "What's going to happen is political violence, and political violence has gotten out of control in this country. We got to stop it. We got to condemn it."

The left absolutely has a problem with political violence right now. Do not let them blur the line between ideological violence and political violence. They need to acknowledge and take accountability for their reckless rhetoric and what it drives people to do.

There's no place in our political discourse for violence. And those who contribute to it ought to really take stock of themselves and think about what kind of country they want to live in. Disagreement can be productive for our country. Violence is not.

🚨BREAKING: Sen. Tina Smith, who lost her friend Speaker Melissa Hortman says Trump only condemning political violence when it affects the right is “corrosive” to our country: “What needs to happen is leaders from both parties across the spectrum need to universally condemn (all political violence). Or it becomes a bit like, "Well, this political violence is worse than that political violence, because this was done against somebody that's on my side versus somebody who's not on my side." And honestly, that's what the President has done. And it's incredibly corrosive to the social-fabric of our country… The foundation of our democracy is that we can argue…and sometimes have strenuous disagreements. But we resolve them with words and not with violence.”

.Chris Hayes: These are the real stakes of the debate about Trump's rhetoric and fascist behavior. It leads people to believe that political violence is okay, that it’s desirable, that their political enemies are subhuman, and if you bash their head in with a hammer, it's funny.

Gov. Shapiro: "This isn't a moment for partisanship. It's not a moment for division. And it's certainly not a moment to cherry pick which incidents of political violence count and which do not...We've seen political violence leave scars on individuals on the political left and the political right. We see it with Congressman Scalise who walks with a limp after being shot, or Congresswoman Giffords...We must condemn all political violence."

For years, Joe Biden and Democrat leaders have called President Trump and WE THE PEOPLE: A threat to Democracy. A threat to the nation. Dangerous. Extreme. And declared that they have to FIGHT us, that they have to get in our face. Today, a bullet aimed for President Trump came within an inch of claiming his life. I call on every single one of them to denounce their rhetoric and calls for political violence. We need to begin the process of unifying as a country and keeping our political disagreements peaceful and rhetorical. The ball is in your court Democrats.

Stephen Colbert issues a 41-second statement on the tragic murder of Charlie Kirk — and leaves the audience with a dark final line. “We here at The Late Show learned that Charlie Kirk, a prominent right-wing activist, was k*lled at a speaking engagement in Utah. Our condolences go out to his family and all of his loved ones. “I’m old enough to personally remember the political violence of the 1960s. And I hope it is obvious to everyone in America that political violence does not solve any of our political differences. Political violence only leads to more political violence. And I pray with all my heart that this is the aberrant action of a madman and not a sign of things to come.”

Stephen Colbert denounces the k*lling of Charlie Kirk while routinely smearing Trump and Republicans as N*zis practically every time he opens his mouth. “After our scripts for tonight’s show were finished this afternoon, we here at the Late Show learned that Charlie Kirk, a prominent right-wing activist, was k*lled at a speaking engagement in Utah. My younger brothers and sisters, you will meet people who hold different political views. Your responsibility is not to fight them, but to convince and persuade them about your ideology or party. We have chosen democracy, and democracy means that every person has the right to choose their political path. It also means you have the right of political association, to belong to a party and to stand by what you believe in.
