He knows she feels unwanted and says he's happy to see her (unlike her mother who didn't want to see her) because he wants to bring her some comfort. He also suggests they should leave the town together, even though he hasn't found Mary. He never suggested the same to Laura, even though she's a child and she's alone. Angela brings out a much more "human" and empathetic side of James that he doesn't show to any other character, not even to Laura or Mary.
