Raghu sir, there is one important difference here. Since entering politics, Vijay’s actions, decisions and speeches have been questioned and criticised — absolutely fair in politics. But his own public speeches have not relied on abusing women, dragging families into politics or making degrading personal remarks of the kind now being debated in this campaign.

Looks like DMK is playing petty politics involving Vijay’s personal life! This post is not to defend Vijay or his actions but to underscore how politics turns dirty when leaders’ personal lives are dragged into the spotlight. Vijay’s alleged affair with “an actress” has been common knowledge for years, with many photos surfacing on social media. But the key question is, why has Vijay’s wife Sangeetha stayed silent all these years despite admitting that she knew about the affair long back? This is where DMK’s dirty politics looks evident and apparent. DMK has a history of launching personal attacks on political adversaries when it can’t win on merit. It did the same to Kamaraj, MGR, and Jayalalithaa. Vijay has now fallen victim to DMK because of his own indiscretion on the eve of elections. A public servant belonging to the Scheduled Caste community in Tindivanam was cornered continuously by DMK Councillors and was made to apologise by falling at the feet of the DMK Councillor Ramya. This is not the first time DMK has humiliated public servants. This is not an isolated incident; earlier, DMK Minister Thiru Raja Kannappan had abused a government servant with caste slurs. What the DMK parades as Social Justice is, in truth, nothing more than Social Injustice.

Ruling parties have rarely lost bypolls in Tamil Nadu, and we have seen this over the past 25 years. For DMK, it will be a Catch-22. Being the main Opposition party, if they boycott the elections, they will be mocked by everyone, especially after their confrontation with CM Vijay in the Assembly. Vijay may even sing a song from Vettaikaaran and say how he hunted down DMK. Even though I don’t want to use this word, “kozhai”, Vijay could portray it as an act of cowardice. If DMK contests and finishes third, behind ADMK, that would be a huge embarrassment for Udhayanidhi. Typical Catch-22. If DMK eventually backs off, CM Vijay need not attack ADMK at all. He can simply say, “Mattrum palar katchi EPS is not my competitor at all, and my main enemy DMK ran away.” In politics, identifying your main enemy is extremely important.
