Today, the online polls open! This is Cambridge's moment to choose its next Chancellor – and with it, a critical opportunity for all of us to shape the University's future. It's a chance to decide whether/how Cambridge will continue to lead the world in research and learning, fiercely protect and promote academic freedom and free speech, and significantly enhance its financial resilience. If elected, I promise to be an active and deeply engaged Chancellor. Had a bit of fun, dress code and all. with @OliversOxford exploring the friendly rivalry between our two great universities. But beneath the joking lies a serious message: Cambridge (like Oxford and higher education generally) must be better equipped, with resources, funding, and global partnerships, to truly thrive in an increasingly fluid world, one replete with both new opportunities and significant risks. I am proud to have co-chaired the £2.2 billion Collegiate Cambridge Capital Campaign with Sir Harvey McGrath. Yesterday at Cambridge University, I joined the launch of the Cambridge–UNRWA report “Palestinian Education: STILL Under Attack.” I spoke about the relentless targeting of Palestinian education in Gaza and the West Bank. Earlier this month, Israeli forces attacked Birzeit University, during class time, shooting 11 students. This is educide — a deliberate attempt to rob Palestinians of knowledge, identity, and a future. Link to full speech

Two important questions now hang over the scandal involving former Cambridge academic Jason Arday says The Free Speech Union founder Toby Young. Who paid Carter-Ruck to send a threatening legal letter to the Times Higher Education while journalist Jack Grove was investigating Arday? And who reported Grove - and retired professor David Harris - to the police for asking questions about his academic record? The Free Speech Union wants to establish whether Cambridge University itself was involved. If it was, that would be extremely serious. Arday has since resigned from Cambridge following plagiarism allegations. Journalists must be free to ask difficult, public-interest questions without lawyers - or the police - being used to shut them down.

Karin Kneissl on current European values: “Europe was, for me, always about freedom. I was studying in the 1980s, in Syria, in Jordan, I always was grateful for the this freedom of speech, this academic freedom I had. As a teacher today in Russia, I see an academic freedom which I have been missing in European universities for the last 20 years. We can discuss here any topic, in a very polite way. It's a true pluralism. You have this or that opinion, and this freedom of academic discussion I've been missing over the last 20 years in Europe.”

📣 COMPLAINTS SCHEME FOR UNIVERSITY ACADEMICS IS NOW LIVE! Finally, academics, university staff and visiting speakers can take complaints directly to the regulator, the Office for Students (OfS), if they believe their free speech rights have been infringed. This was promised under the Higher Education (Freedom of Speech) Act 2023 (HEFSA), passed by the last Conservative Government. The complaints scheme was meant to come into effect on 1 August 2024, but in one of her first acts as Education Secretary, Bridget Phillipson paused the implementation of this vital free speech provision. Following the threat of legal action from the Free Speech Union and pressure from numerous academics, Ms Phillipson announced a partial U-turn. After months of dragging her feet, she finally announced the complaints scheme for university staff in April 2026. For keeping her word — eventually — the FSU thanks her. At the Free Speech Union, we have dealt with countless academics who have been hounded out of their jobs, ostracised by their peers and penalised for expressing lawfully held views. This has been a disaster for free speech and academic freedom on campus. While the FSU very much welcomes this move, the battle for free speech on campus is far from over. Unlike under the original legislation passed by Parliament, students will not be able to use the complaints scheme.
