Although this logo is inspired by a torii gate, it feels as though the designer does not truly understand the essence of a torii. A torii symbolizes the sacred entrance to the path where the gods pass through, and the central open space in particular must never be blocked—it is the pathway reserved exclusively for the divine. Filling that important negative space with letters goes against the spiritual meaning of the torii and feels deeply inappropriate. Furthermore, the beauty of traditional Japanese design lies in “simplicity is best,” valuing minimalism and the aesthetics of space. The quiet serenity and sense of open breathing that emerges from respecting empty space is at the very core of Eastern beauty. No sense of wabi-sabi aesthetics can be felt either. In contrast, this logo crams alphabet letters tightly together and applies excessive decoration, which makes it feel extremely stifling and oppressive. As a result, no matter where you look, you cannot sense any Japanese atmosphere or spirit—instead, it leaves only the impression of a Western-style, over-packed design. If the theme is a torii gate, I wish the designer had taken an approach that respected its essence more deeply and honored the beauty of empty space.
