The AP and its partners in the Global Indigenous Reporting Network -- MPR News, KOSU and The Imprint -- spoke to families about the disproportionate violence in their communities and the changes they want. According to the U.S. Department of Justice, Native Americans and Alaska Natives are more than twice as likely than the general population to be victims of a violent crime, and Native women are twice as likely to be victims of homicide.

Then the French came. They built a new society adapted to the realities of North America, shaped by the river and forest, by trade with Indigenous nations, and by the determination to survive and flourish in this land. When the British came, that civilization did not disappear. It endured and now it thrives.
