He’s obviously one of the greatest actors ever. But one could argue that he went a bit over the top in this role, and in the scene in particular. And when rewarded with an Academy Award for his efforts, he more or less continued on that path going forward (there are definitely exceptions, though). He sometimes gets criticized for hamming it up in Heat—which I always thought was fair, even as much as I love that performance. But then it came out several years ago that as originally written and shot his character was doing blow throughout the movie; Mann, though, then decided to remove those scenes. The performance makes a lot more sense one you learn that!
