As I listened to the excellent presentation by Marco Navarro-Genie at the Alberta and the West Assembly on Saturday, I was struck by his remarks about the national debt. To paraphrase, this debt already exists, and we pay the interest on this debt. Whether we are independent or we stay in Canada, we are still paying this debt. More importantly, I recognize that the debt is being grown at shocking rates. In the last ten years alone the federal debt has doubled. Albertans are not properly represented in Parliament, and there is no way for us to stop this spending spree. If we are independent we will have to keep paying down the existing debt, but we will be able to stop this irresponsible spending and right our fiscal ship.
