Politicians, military, civilians are all involved, just as it was with illegal bunkering. The chinese we like to vilify are also employed or deployed by such people. No foreigner operates in Nigeria without endorsement from some local authority. The only reason illegal mining isn’t getting the attention illegal bunkering had is not because there is less “big men” involved in oil bunkering than minning, but there are less direct state actors and multinationals involved in it. They seem to be the biggest persuader for governments in taking decisive action on matters of resource conflicts. And the reason there are far less multinationals and direct state involvement in it is that it does not require as much capital or operational footprint to extract gold as it is oil and gas, but yields a multiplied value in comparison. In any case, I believe the cost of lives, and threat to authority of the gov cause by armed groups associated with illegal minning activities should make the gov worry and act even if not for economic impact and environmental . We are heading to point of no return with this illegal mining conspired armed conflicts, and the spread is too large for any sane gov to ignore.
