Reminds me of the Toyota plant I used to work in where the autonomous industrial vehicles would stop and politely say "excuse me" if someone was blocking their path. Occasionally they would come face to face and sit there going "excuse me" "excuse me" "excuse me" "excuse me" in a big game of chicken (except no one ever backed down) until the designated AMR wrangler would come and sort it out 🤣

No, Tesla didn't start with a free trial for all cars when launching FSD (Supervised) in Australia/New Zealand in late Aug/Sept 2025. 30-day free trial was only for new buyers/deliveries. Rollout: Staged starting Sept 18 with HW4 cars (Model 3 from Sep 2023, Model Y from Jan 2024). Existing FSD purchasers activated immediately on those. HW3 later. Subscription ($149/mo) added shortly after. Direct sub access now available in AU.

This was a good thing because it gave Waymo a chance to solve a complex problem. Still way ahead of Tesla.

My opinion is that this is a software problem, not hardware.

This is exactly why autonomous systems need to be able to communicate with each other. Human drivers can easily resolve this by making eye contact or using hand gestures, but since AVs don't know how to 'read the room' or yield, they just end up in this endless loop of going back and forth. All FSD manufacturers need to agree on a standardized communication protocol so the vehicles can talk to each other and coordinate automatically. It's a huge waste of potential to have internet-connected cars operating entirely standalone.

I live on a one-lane road, and I've seen humans do stupider things and take longer.

Even though Waymo vehicles are currently operating with only about 3,000 units, these problems are appearing too frequently. I can't count how many times I've seen it. If it increases to 10,000 or 100,000 units, traffic will be paralyzed due to Waymo.
