I had calculated that American banks had lent much more money to foreign countries than they would be able to pay back, and anticipated an imminent debt crisis. But I couldn’t have been more wrong. But, I mean, I know the book. It was more Kafka than Orwell I was thinking of; the atmosphere of Kafka intrigues me more, the inability to get hold of this thing that seems to be controlling or determining your life. It was interesting that the thing ended up being as close to the story of 1984, because I didn't plan it that way. It just seemed to be close to the natural course of events. I had a script that no one was interested in giving me any money for, So I wrote 'Time Bandits' with Michael [Palin], and after the success of that, people said, "Well, now you can really do all sorts of things."
