Admiral Brad Cooper, U.S. Central Command Commander: It's an honor to address conference attendees on the historic opportunity presented by Syria's ongoing transition. The United States and Syria share an interest in preserving peace and stability across the Middle East. Since assuming command of CENTCOM in August, I've had... the privilege of visiting Syria multiple times, including a historic trip to Damascus in September, where I met President Alshara and became CENTCOM's first commander to visit what is clearly a vibrant city brimming with hope, possibility, and opportunity. As you may have seen this past week, I publicly praised Syria for the role their security forces played in interdicting weapons intended for Hezbollah. These are the types of tangible security gains we can achieve on the ground through close cooperation with Syrian government forces. CENTCOM will continue to play an active role in supporting Ambassador Barrack's efforts to realize the president's vision of a prosperous Middle East and a stable Syria at peace with itself and its neighbors. We are heavily involved in enabling the U.S. interagency to engage with the Syrian government in Damascus, supporting more than a dozen visits from the U.S. interagency and Congress since last summer. And because I know it’s on your mind, yes, we were also able to fit in a few three-pointers during basketball. That's well documented. I’m leaving for a very important meeting with Donald J. Trump in Washington. The fact that this would be President Trump’s first meeting with a foreign leader since his inauguration is telling. I think it’s a testimony to the strength of the Israeli-American alliance. It’s also a testimony to the strength of our personal friendship. That friendship and that cooperation has already yielded important results for Israel and the Middle East, including the historic Abraham Accords that President Trump led and which brought four historic peace treaties between Israel and its Arab neighbors. In this meeting we’ll deal with important issues, critical issues facing Israel and our region: victory over Hamas, achieving the release of all our hostages and dealing with the Iranian terror axis in all its components—an axis that threatens the peace of Israel, the Middle East and the entire world. Syrian “President” Ahmed al-Sharaa, better known as Abu Mohammed al-Julani was branded an ISIS terrorist with a $10 million U.S. bounty on his head until May of 2025 for jihadist atrocities against religious minorities. He just touched down in Washington DC this weekend, marking the first bilateral visit by a Syrian leader outside of the UN General Assembly. Julani, whose forces have been accused of systematic killings of Christians, Druze, and other minorities in Syria, is meeting with President Trump at the White House on Monday. In a disturbing video, Syria’s jihadist leader was filmed casually playing basketball with U.S. Central Command chief Gen. Brad Cooper, the person in charge of overseeing American military operations against ISIS. Eleven months ago, al-Sharaa was America’s most-wanted man in Syria; today, he’s an honored White House guest despite ongoing religious persecution and ISIS led violence in Syria at the direction of Julani. I traveled to the Syrian border this week and met with some of Julani’s victims, including family members of victims who have been killed or are suffering at the hands of Julani’s forces in Suwayda, Southern Syria. Julani is a mass murderer and he will NEVER stop being a mass murderer. History will not remember this visit by Julani to the White House as a positive for our country, or the Trump administration. Innocent people are being killed and I would like to see the Trump administration condemn Julani’s massacre of Druze, Christians and Alawites, and stop entertaining jihadists in suits. Syrian “President” Ahmed al-Sharaa, better known as Abu Mohammed al-Julani was branded an ISIS terrorist with a $10 million U.S. bounty on his head until May of 2025 for jihadist atrocities against religious minorities. He just touched down in Washington DC this weekend, marking the first bilateral visit by a Syrian leader outside of the UN General Assembly. Julani, whose forces have been accused of systematic killings of Christians, Druze, and other minorities in Syria, is meeting with President Trump at the White House on Monday. In a disturbing video, Syria’s jihadist leader was filmed casually playing basketball with U.S. Central Command chief Gen. Brad Cooper, the person in charge of overseeing American military operations against ISIS. Eleven months ago, al-Sharaa was America’s most-wanted man in Syria; today, he’s an honored White House guest despite ongoing religious persecution and ISIS led violence in Syria at the direction of Julani. I traveled to the Syrian border this week and met with some of Julani’s victims, including family members of victims who have been killed or are suffering at the hands of Julani’s forces in Suwayda, Southern Syria. Julani is a mass murderer and he will NEVER stop being a mass murderer. History will not remember this visit by Julani to the White House as a positive for our country, or the Trump administration. Innocent people are being killed and I would like to see the Trump administration condemn Julani’s massacre of Druze, Christians and Alawites, and stop entertaining jihadists in suits. We need to be tough on Islamic terrorism, and that’s one of the main reasons why I voted for President Trump! What is it they say about putting lipstick on a pig? An important visit to the United States. In Washington, I met with a bipartisan delegation from the U.S. Senate. Our discussions focused on the continued military assistance for Ukraine, relevant legislative initiatives, my meeting with President Trump, efforts to achieve a just and lasting peace, our vision for ending the war, and the importance of robust security guarantees. ⚡️Syrian President: Hezbollah’s Intervention in Syria Was a Mistake, but Dialogue Remains Necessary Interviewer: Would you accept sitting down with Hezbollah at the negotiating table? -Syrian President: If that serves Lebanon’s interests and secures Syrian interests, then why not? -Interviewer: Have you turned the page on the past? -Syrian President: We carry a deep wound. 14 years of displacement and migration. Hezbollah did major things inside Syria. Then the IRGC went to Russia, and brought the Russians into Syria, and they did what all of you saw live on air over the course of 14 years. -Interviewer: So if circumstances required it, would you sit at the negotiating table with them? -Syrian President: I believe in the principle of dialogue, even between opposing sides. Dialogue must remain open and continue, because when dialogue and discussion are shut down, the alternative is war. Dialogue should come first, second, third, and tenth. We have a deep problem with Hezbollah, but we do not want all of Lebanon to die. We want to solve the problem of Hezbollah while keeping Lebanon alive. -Interviewer: What would you say to the Shia community in Lebanon? -Syrian President: I believe Hezbollah’s entry into the conflict in Syria was a mistake, and I believe many people recognize that, including figures within Hezbollah itself. Many perceptions can sometimes be mistaken and lead to wrong decisions. But entire peoples end up paying the price. There is a deep Syrian wound. People are still searching for the remains of their children in burial sites, on roadsides, and in mass graves. Hezbollah was a participant in the crimes that took place in Syria. However, we do not want Lebanon to fall into what Syria fell into in the past, because the consequences of wars and conflicts are painful and bloody. It is time for the region to move beyond wars and conflicts and transition toward development and reconstruction. -Interviewer: What would you say to the Shia sect in Lebanon? Syrian President: First, there must be a careful review of what happened in the past, because returning to the truth is better than persisting in falsehood. There must also be a search for solutions that ensure the security and well-being of the Shia community in Lebanon. The Shia community in Lebanon needs a process of rescue within the Lebanese situation, and Lebanon itself must be rescued alongside it. God knows that I am sincere in this regard, because the loss of any component of Lebanese society is a loss for the entire region. I do not subscribe to the idea that all Shias in Lebanon are Hezbollah. We hear many things and receive many messages from here and there. I believe there is a very significant opportunity to stop the war in Lebanon, to create a safe environment in the country, to reach political and sectarian consensus, and to emerge from the turmoil that Lebanon is currently experiencing.
