Following the imposition of sweeping restrictions on women's education, employment, and movement, it now appears that even citizens' privacy is not safe from Taliban oversight. The suppression of women, arrests, and silencing of protest voices in Herat had previously sparked widespread concerns, but the inspection of mobile phones and scrutiny of citizens' personal information is regarded by many as yet another assault on people's fundamental rights and privacy.

This is a heinous crime against the people of Afghanistan — a direct assault on human dignity, freedom, and the rights of women. The EU and its member states’ plans to deport Afghan nationals are a disgrace. We rallied outside the EU Commission headquarters to spread the message that Afghanistan cannot be considered a safe country. Its dire human rights situation, deepening humanitarian crisis and systemic oppression of women and girls, make deportation a dangerous move and ignore the EU’s own legal obligations. Anyone deported back to the country faces real and well-documented risks to their safety and rights. The Taliban must be held accountable for their widespread and systematic human rights abuses.

That’s how long millions of Afghan girls and women have been waiting, for classrooms to reopen, for workplaces to welcome them back, for their dreams to breathe again. I was one of the lucky ones. I had the chance to learn, work, grow, be independent, and make choices about my own life; like any human being should. But I often think: this could have been the story of countless other Afghan girls if only they had been given the same opportunities. Education and work are not privileges, they are basic human rights. Until every girl in Afghanistan can study and work freely, the world will continue to miss out on their talent, ideas, and contributions. In just a few years, Afghanistan has lost what took two decades to achieve, especially for women. Decades of progress have been rolled back, taking with them the voices, dreams, and potential of millions. Today marks four years since Afghanistan changed in a way that put the future of its girls and women on hold. I stand in solidarity with them - those whose dreams have been taken away entirely.
