AfDB PRESIDENCY: ZAMBIA'S DR. SAMUEL MAIMBO OFFICIALLY LAUNCHES CANDIDACY Dr. Samuel Maimbo has been endorsed by both the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA). LUSAKA, Zambia, Jan. 31, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Development finance expert Dr. Samuel Maimbo today announced his candidacy for President of the African Development Bank (AfDB), presenting a transformative vision for Africa's economic future. "Africa stands at a critical juncture," Dr. Maimbo declared. "We need to get one billion people to work as quickly as possible by strategically supporting the industries that will improve livelihoods and ignite prosperity on our continent. The AfDB needs bold, results-driven leadership that is unafraid of making the hard decisions required to get the job done." With a 30-year career characterized by delivering real-world impact – record-breaking fundraising, translating bold ideas into practical implementation plans, and enhancing institutional efficiency – Dr. Maimbo represents an exciting way forward for the AfDB. His presidential platform focuses on achieving middle-income status for Africa through an AfDB which is laser focused on pace, scale and effectiveness of delivery. "Africa needs significantly higher rates of growth to successfully navigate today's development challenges and capture tomorrow's opportunities," said Dr. Maimbo. "I'm ready on day one to support governments in reaching their goals. It's time to stop talking about Africa's potential and start realizing it." Dr. Maimbo's core priorities include: Trade and Regional Integration: Currently at just 3% of global trade, Africa has immense growth potential through the AfCFTA's unified market of 1.4 billion people. Financial Resources: Strengthening markets, boosting savings, and attracting diverse investments can close Africa's financing gap. Agricultural Transformation: With 60% of the world's uncultivated arable land, Africa can become a global agricultural powerhouse. Infrastructure Development: Modernizing infrastructure is crucial for competitiveness and growth. Energy Access: Accelerating energy access while promoting sustainability will power Africa's long-term economic advancement. Climate Action: Despite contributing <4% to global emissions, Africa faces disproportionate climate impacts. Scaling up investments in resilience and embracing new technologies will safeguard Africa. Creative Industries: A powerful driver of youth employment and cultural exports, Africa's creative industries can amplify Africa's global impact. Inclusivity: Young people, women, and underserved communities across Africa must help design effective strategies. Born and raised in Lusaka, Dr. Maimbo has worked in development finance across Africa and the globe, most recently serving as the Vice President of Budget, Performance Review, and Strategic Planning at the World Bank. As Chief of Staff to successive World Bank Presidents, he played an instrumental role in advancing the institution's mission and strategy at the highest international levels. His stewardship in resource mobilization secured an unprecedented $93 billion financing package under the International Development Association replenishment, with over 70% of the organization's global commitments directed toward Africa. South Africa Is Playing With Fire Boardrooms are now battlegrounds. Activists are marching into corporate offices across South Africa demanding that "foreigners" pack up and leave. President Cyril Ramaphosa Cyril Ramaphosa 🇿🇦 this cannot stand and here's why it's not just wrong, it's dangerously short-sighted. Please ask yourself does South Africa know how deeply it is embedded in the rest of this continent? ✅️1. MTN carries hundreds of millions of subscribers across Nigeria, Ghana, Uganda, Rwanda, Côte d'Ivoire, and beyond a South African company thriving on African soil that isn't its own. MTN South Africa ✅️2. Absa now earns nearly a third of its group profit from outside South Africa — Botswana, Ghana, Kenya, Mauritius, Mozambique, Uganda, Zambia, Tanzania and is still acquiring more African banks as we speak. Absa Group ✅️3.Standard Bank remains the continent's largest bank by assets, moving trillions of rand through African economies every single year. Standard Bank ZA ✅️4. MultiChoice/DStv has for decades been the dominant gatekeeper of entertainment and information across dozens of African households. ✅️5. Sanlam and Old Mutual manage insurance and pension savings for millions of East and West Africans. ✅️6. Nandos, Steers, and Debonairs feed households across Kenya, Nigeria, Zambia, and Uganda. ✅️7. Bidvest and Imperial Logistics run supply chains that keep goods moving through multiple African economies. ✅8. ️Then there's tourism an industry South Africa depends on heavily, and where the hypocrisy cuts sharpest. Hospitality groups like Tsogo Sun, City Lodge, and Sun International have expanded into Zambia, Nigeria, and beyond. South African Airways, Airlink, and a web of SA-based travel companies have spent decades marketing Cape Town, Kruger, and the Garden Route to the rest of the continent and Africans have answered in huge numbers. Kenyans, Nigerians, Ghanaians, and others fill Sandton hotels, Table Mountain cable cars, and Kruger safari lodges every year, injecting real foreign currency into the South African economy. So which is it? Do you want African wallets in your tills and African bodies in your hotel beds, but not African faces in your boardrooms? Now imagine just for a moment Nigeria, Kenya, Zambia, or Ghana adopting the same logic. Boardrooms in Lagos or Nairobi staging walk-ins demanding MTN executives leave, Absa hand back its banking licenses, or Kenyan immigration quietly discouraging South African tourists from checking into Mombasa or Diani hotels. The fallout for South Africa would be instant and brutal and tourism, banking, and telecoms would be the first casualties, not the last. This is the essence of glass houses and stones. You cannot build a continental empire in banking, telecoms, insurance, and tourism, and then slam the door on that same continent's citizens the moment it's convenient at home. It's worth remembering South Africa's most celebrated exports thrive precisely because other nations didn't gatekeep opportunity by passport. Trevor Noah built a global career from a studio in New York. Elon Musk, born in Pretoria, built his fortune in Silicon Valley and Texas. Both benefited from economies that judged them on merit, not nationality. Trevor Noah Elon Musk If Africa responds to South Africa's boardroom nativism with mirrored nativism, no one wins least of all South Africans working, investing, and building across this continent. Mr. President, this is a fire worth putting out before it spreads. As always, I choose to remain an optimist. Mohammed Hersi A true African patriot at heart

Now that we’ve all had a few days to process the hype surrounding the proposed 650,000 bbl/d refinery in East Africa 🇰🇪 🇺🇬 🇹🇿, let’s take a long, hard look in the mirror. [1] Funding Gap: Where will Kenya 🇰🇪, Uganda 🇺🇬, and Tanzania 🇹🇿 raise the ~ $20 billion needed to build this facility when they already spend more on debt servicing than on healthcare or education? Just as critical - can they raise that capital, cheaply? [2] Diplomacy Deficit: Relations between these three countries are prickly on most days. Can nations that block agricultural imports, incinerate day-old chicks and limit the reach of each other’s airlines really cooperate on a project of this magnitude? [3] Successor Risk: With potential changes in government in Kenya 🇰🇪 (2027) and Uganda 🇺🇬 (2031), will the successors of William Ruto and Yoweri Museveni prioritize regional interests over national ones? “When Aliko Dangote built his refinery in Nigeria, he was essentially dealing with one country,” says Wangari Kebuchi, Founder & MD at Expertise Global . Given the clashing interests involved here, she warns that “discussions are going to be much more intense than what was faced in Nigeria.” What trade-offs are East African policymakers willing to accept? Do they have the policy discipline to execute this without wasting billions in taxpayer dollars, as they have in other, smaller infrastructure projects?

I got my hands on 65 hours worth of live broadcast news coverage and special reports on the MOVE bombing which occurred 41 years ago today. I produced this piece using that archival footage. On May 13, 1985, Philadelphia police dropped a C4 explosive on the home of the @themoveorganization family at 62nd and Osage Avenue, after 500 police fired over 10,000 rounds into the home. City officials allowed the fire to burn, killing 11 people including five children, and destroying 61 homes. Eyewitness and forensic evidence indicates that several MOVE children attempted to flee the burning home through the rear but were either shot back inside or their bullet-ridden bodies were thrown back into fire by police waiting in the alleyway. In 2021, it was revealed UPenn and Princeton had stolen the remains of several of the children and not only conducted experiments on them but also wheeled them out on gurneys at fundraising events. John Africa's head has never been returned and saw marks on his neck indicate foul play during an unauthorized autopsy. No one has ever been held accountable for any of it. In 2023, Mike Africa Jr. bought the house back which was originally owned by his aunt Louise James, but was seized by the City through eminent domain after the bombing and turned into a police substation. He is barred from turning the home into a memorial until he pays off the $400K mortgage, support link below. Why were our comrades arrested in Kenya by Ruto’s armed thugs? Why are we repressed in Britian? See for yourselves what frightens imperialism: words and ideas backed by mass support. Kenyans Challenge French Imperialism, Protest Africa-France Summit In Nairobi On May 11, 2026, African delegates convened in Nairobi, Kenya, for the “Africa Forward Summit 2026”. The summit was co-chaired by Kenya’s Western-aligned President, William Ruto, and French President Emmanuel Macron, its theme: “Africa–France Partnerships for Innovation and Growth”. On paper, this summit marketed itself as a “paradigm shift” in Africa-France relations aimed at building “equitable”, “mutually respectful” partnerships between the two geopolitical entities. But the antics of President Macron during the summit’s proceedings, the curious timing of the event itself, and the arrests of anti-imperialist activists and international delegates in Nairobi, who staged a peaceful protest against this summit, paint a very different picture of France’s intentions. In this video, General Secretary of the Communist Party Marxist (CPM) - Kenya, Booker Ngesa Omole, who led the protests along with representatives from anti-imperialist organizations and movements from across the globe, states the reasons for this protest and comments on the realities behind France's latest stunt in Africa. Thanks to our comrades Communist Party Marxist CPM - Kenya Revolutionary Youth League-Kenya ☭ Booker Ngesa Omole ☭ and The Spearhead for delivering this powerful message and making this powerful video. Reproduced in comradeship and with thanks. Workers of all countries unite! Death to imperialism!

CFTC Mike Selig laid out an exciting roadmap for the Commission's top priorities at Milken Institute's Future of Finance 2026 today: "I view Project Crypto as a historic initiative between the agencies to upgrade and modernize our rules and regulations and future-proof them for technologies like crypto...." "Many of the firms want to move onchain. The prior administration drove a lot of these firms and the liquidity offshore. The perpetuals markets are a great example of this. We've had perpetual futures contracts in crypto assets for a very long time[,] but they've developed offshore[.] We've got to bring that back to the United States. We need to have that liquidity here in the U.S...." "We're working towards getting perpetual futures, true perpetual futures, not long-dated contracts, here in the U.S. within the next month or so.... We're also working towards onchain markets, so we're looking to have clear guidance as to what sort of digital wallets would implicate our regulations. The prior administration really went after firms that were just offering software products...." "We're also working towards regulations that accommodate onchain software systems, so decentralized finance protocols and other types of blockchain networks.... We're going to make sure it's very clear as to what implicates the CFTC's regulations and what doesn't, and to the extent that an onchain software system or front-end does implicate our rules or regulations, we're modernizing and future-proofing those rules so that there's a place for all of that." HPC applauds Chairman Selig's forward-thinking approach to regulation and stands ready to support his crucial work ensuring that decentralized markets for perpetual derivatives thrive in the United States. 🇺🇸
