Mary Vincent encountered Singleton while attempting to hitchhike to Vegas from California. While on the journey, Vincent became wary of Singleton's actions as he intentionally drove in the wrong direction. She tried to flee, but Singleton struck her unconscious with a sledgehammer before she could escape. Upon awakening, she found herself bound as Singleton brutally assaulted and raped her. Following this, he horrifically severed both her forearms with a hatchet. Singleton then callously hurled her off a cliff before departing, leaving her for dead. Somehow, she survived and climbed back up the cliff despite her injuries.She then tried to signal passing drivers for assistance. After walking along Interstate 5 for almost three miles, she finally caught the attention of a couple who provided aid and helped her receive medical attention. Vincent helped the authorities identify Singleton who was eventually arrested and sentenced to 14 years for the horrific crime. Sadly, he served just 8 years of his sentence and was released in 1987 despite massive public outrage. He moved back to Florida, where in 1997, he murdered a mother of three. He was sentenced to death but died in 2001 from cancer.
