After almost three decades, Canada has lost its measles elimination status. That means in 2025, this extremely contagious disease spread consistently in our country for the first time since 1998. This was preventable, which makes it embarrassing -- in more ways than you might realize:

This current surge may be slowing, but doctors warn there are still serious risks for vulnerable populations, including children and pregnant women. Cardiac deaths were already the biggest killer in our country, but we have a mysterious 10% increase. The Library briefing pack for this debate contains a startling statistic. Almost casually, it mentions that cardiovascular deaths per 100,000 population have risen by 10% since 2019, after falling steadily for decades. I wish I had more time to debate this important topic, which is why I have applied for a three hour debate on Trends in Excess Deaths. Thank you to Dean Russell for bringing this incredibly relevant debate to the chamber.
