However, Hyderabad—the largest and richest—under the Nizam, refused to accede and was even backed by Mohammad Ali Jinnah. The Nizam patronized the Razakars, a militia that unleashed horrific atrocities, including killings, abductions, and assaults on women. Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel ji described the situation as an “ulcer in the belly of India.” Taking charge, despite opposition from then PM Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru, Patel ji launched ‘Operation Polo’, and within four days Hyderabad was integrated into India.
