🇸🇦 Saudi Arabia spent years trying to defeat the Houthis... Now Riyadh may be discovering why military power alone couldn’t finish the job. The 2015-2022 intervention ultimately left the Houthis more experienced and militarily capable, with missiles and drones giving them the ability to threaten Saudi cities and critical infrastructure from across the border. That creates an uncomfortable calculation for Riyadh: Vision 2030 depends heavily on tourism, foreign investment and the perception that Saudi Arabia is a stable place to do business, exactly the things renewed attacks could undermine. With Washington signaling it won’t participate in another Saudi-led campaign, Riyadh is pursuing deeper security cooperation with countries including Britain, France, Pakistan and Egypt. However, additional military partnerships don’t resolve the underlying problem: Saudi Arabia can intercept attacks and retaliate, but permanently removing the Houthi threat would require a far more difficult and potentially costly campaign. That leaves diplomacy as another path, including negotiations through regional intermediaries and potential concessions aimed at preventing another cycle of escalation. 🇸🇦 Saudi Arabia spent years trying to defeat the Houthis... Now Riyadh may be discovering why military power alone couldn’t finish the job. The 2015-2022 intervention ultimately left the Houthis more experienced and militarily capable, with missiles and drones giving them the ability to threaten Saudi cities and critical infrastructure from across the border. That creates an uncomfortable calculation for Riyadh: Vision 2030 depends heavily on tourism, foreign investment and the perception that Saudi Arabia is a stable place to do business, exactly the things renewed attacks could undermine. With Washington signaling it won’t participate in another Saudi-led campaign, Riyadh is pursuing deeper security cooperation with countries including Britain, France, Pakistan and Egypt. However, additional military partnerships don’t resolve the underlying problem: Saudi Arabia can intercept attacks and retaliate, but permanently removing the Houthi threat would require a far more difficult and potentially costly campaign. That leaves diplomacy as another path, including negotiations through regional intermediaries and potential concessions aimed at preventing another cycle of escalation.
