Tens of thousands of Minnesotans joined a massive general strike and protest in Minneapolis on Friday as part of the “ICE Out of Minnesota: Day of Truth and Freedom.” Residents refused to work, shop or go to school to demand that ICE leave the city and be held accountable for its intimidation and violence. The coordinated strike shut hundreds of businesses and sent a huge crowd into downtown streets in subzero temperatures, where marchers chanted against ICE’s heavy federal enforcement and the fatal shooting of Renee Good by an ICE agent. Protesters pressed aggressively for an end to the agency’s presence in Minnesota and a halt to what they call bullying and unconstitutional tactics. ICE has long been a source of national controversy in the US because it detains hundreds of thousands of immigrants each year, many of whom have no criminal record, and holds them in civil detention while their immigration cases play out in court. General Strike in Minneapolis on Friday: As part of a nationwide mobilization in support of the general strike called by protesters in Minneapolis, student groups representing Somali, Liberian, Ethiopian, and Black students from the University of Minnesota organized a demonstration protesting ICE on Friday. Demonstrators in downtown Minneapolis filled up to four city blocks and marched together chanting for ICE agents to leave Minnesota. Strikers abstained from school, work, and shopping. Protesters demanded murder charges for Jonathan Ross, the ICE agent who killed Renée Good on January 7, and denounced the ICE killing of Alex Pretti later this month. The marchers are mobilizing against Operation Metro Surge, the series of immigration raids carried out by DHS throughout Minnesota, which began in Minneapolis and St. Paul. ICE and Border Patrol have arrested over 3,000 people in the operation since December 2025. Organizer Simon Elliott said the student groups, many of them immigrants, were inspired by the bravery of their communities and fueled by Trump’s comments about Somali people. An ICE agent today shot and killed an unarmed 37-year-old woman during an ICE operation in Minneapolis who were there under the guise of protecting us." Later, after a clip of Mayor Jacob Frey, Kimmel got an idea for a T-shirt campaign, "Now that is the shirt I want to see, to ICE, "Get the [bleep] out of Minneapolis.” Get the [bleep] out of all these cities."
