When alpine skier Mikaela Shiffrin last won an Olympic gold medal, in PyeongChang eight years ago, her father Jeff—known throughout the skiing community for both his unyielding fandom of his phenom daughter and his passion for ski-racing photography—put his hands on his hat in the South Korea cold. “Oh my God!” he yelled. Two years later, in 2020, Jeff Shiffrin died suddenly, in an accident in his Colorado home. He was 65. Jeff was the one who put Mikaela on skis when she was 2. So it was only fitting that nearly a decade since that day in South Korea, Mikaela Shiffrin movingly talked about her father on Wednesday, after she won the Olympic gold medal in the slalom race in Cortina d'Ampezzo. She struck a gate and somersaulted onto her back before crashing into protective netting, suffering a stab wound through her abdominal muscles. She calls her comeback regimen “exposure therapy,” as repeated runs on the mountain gradually eased her fears. Egypt said she sees eating a man’s ass as an empowering act. While she admitted she’s only done it with one or two men, she explained that it makes her feel good and believes many men are more open to it than people assume, especially in Miami. She added that she’d only do it for someone she was genuinely attracted to, saying it depends on everything about the person. Today would have been my mother’s 104th birthday! Happy, happy birthday, Mummy. I think of my mother every day, and I miss her every single day. I still talk to her all the time. I seek out her advice. I know she would be proud. But especially on her birthday, I think of her a lot. She loved her birthday! She would sail her boat on her birthday. She would eat her favorite foods. She would try to beat me in tennis… she was a fierce competitor! When people think and talk of the Kennedy family, they so often single out the men. But they are missing the real story. The story of the strength and the resolve of the women like my mother. She changed the world — no two ways about it! She started the Special Olympics! Today, the Special Olympics provides training and activities to more than 5 million participants in 172 countries. It’s the largest sporting organization for people with intellectual disabilities in the world. I made a film about her several years ago (‘The Kennedy who Changed the World’) that is always worth reviewing! Her life is worth celebrating — today and on all days! #inspireheartsandminds
