Somaliland does deserve international recognition as a state. It meets the key sovereignty criteria and has built stable governance over the past 3 decades. That being said, recognition is a foreign policy choice. Israel likely recognized Somaliland because of heightened Red Sea insecurity from Houthi operations and willingness to rebuild regional alliances since the start of the Gaza conflict. Merits for recognition do not automatically grant recognition, nor should they.
