After repenting and receiving forgiveness from the Lord, how do we overcome lingering feelings of guilt and shame?

Feeling the spirit has always been a good indication of forgiveness!

Here’s a concise, to-the-point answer that aligns with teachings from Elder D. Todd Christofferson and general doctrine on this topic… Accept that the Lord has fully forgiven you, then choose to forgive yourself… Lingering guilt and shame often persist because we keep punishing ourselves even after the Savior has already paid the price. The short path forward is… 1. Believe His forgiveness is complete When the Lord says your sins are gone, they are (see Doctrine and Covenants 58:42; Isaiah 1:18; Psalm 103:12). 2. Stop rehearsing the sin Deliberately turn your mind away from it. Don’t keep re-opening the wound. 3. Focus on Christ and forward progress Fill your thoughts with gratitude for the Atonement, service, scripture study, prayer, and doing good. The best way to feel clean is to **live clean** going forward. 4. Trust that feelings follow faith Peace usually comes gradually as you act in faith, not as a single dramatic moment. In essence… “The Lord has let it go. Let it go.” (If the feelings remain heavy or feel like clinical depression/anxiety, talking with a trusted bishop and possibly a professional counselor is wise and encouraged.)

How did ridding himself of all that guilt and shame (and annotation that would have kept him away from children in his ward) work out for the victims of your pedophile brother Wade? The policies of your church protect abusers and create target rich environments among the flock.

It can be difficult to not fall victim to the Adversarial attacks on our prior choices that led us to repentance. God’s mercy, love and the teachings found in the scriptures help me discover the truthfulness of just how much God truly loves us

Thank you for this wonderful message. Seeing it this morning was a timely answer to personal prayer.

Such a simpleton & sickening mindset only a narcissist or idjit would think this is something to say in public No you don't just clean muddy off your own shoes & move on If you left muddy footprints on other people lives then you're not done till you get their forgiveness

Wonderful message to wake up to this morning. Can't wait to share!

This is very inspired, thank you President 🙏🏿

So true!

I do not mind that I remember the horror of my vile sins because I take it as a way to remember that sins hurt others, not just me and I keep the memory of them not as a holding on of guilt but as a reminder to go and do them no more. I am so grateful His sacrifice paid the price

. Give your heart ...just return and when you do don't expect judgment expect mercy. Blood poured for you to be able to return .. so if you returned and Satan makes you feel that guilt remember the blood and rebuke the adversary you are loved and your salvation was paid w blood

Satan will use any way he can to diminish your intent. I know who the accuser is... Hell devour one who doesn't know God's love. with authority and love the blood pours ! All to return ! Repent! Believe the blood atoned, accuser injects doubt! Rebuke the blood was for me!!!

Sometimes it just takes time to no longer feel any pain or remorse. Just keep going and doing good. Seeking the spirit daily and trying to follow the Savior. The power of the atonement is not a transactional event that all of the sudden happens and then one checks the box and the “feelings” are gone. This is a transformational process that can sometimes take years. Allow the process and the Spirit to work within you and Christ can heal and bring the peace you seek. 🫶🏻

I'm not sure if it's the same talk, but Elder Scott's 'Peace of Mind' talk in the 2004 October session always stuck with me and is worth remembering for those, like me, who struggled letting go of past mistakes.

@Mormonger People who actually repent don't have guilt or shame.

Repentance is surrender giving your heart to who asks for it and returning to your creator and he always is merciful and compassionate to take you back. The word repent actually means return. If you ask for forgiveness from the heart , renounce and return to your creator changed

I got rid of my shame by quitting your reprehensible cult and going to therapy ☺️

First Satan will always tempt you to think you weren't forgiven and lead you into temptation again. YAHWEH knows this but what you don't know is repent! Is not a demand from an angry judge . It's the open arms of a grieving father who never stops watching the road for your return
