Rep. Becca Balint (D-Vt.) and Attorney General Pam Bondi clashed during a House hearing Wednesday after Balint pressed her about Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick’s ties to Jeffrey Epstein. During the hearing, Bondi combatively defended her leadership at the Justice Department to House lawmakers amid sharp criticism that she botched the release of the Epstein files and has wielded the nation’s most powerful law enforcement agency to heed President Donald Trump’s calls to prosecute his political foes. In exchange after exchange, Bondi lobbed brash insults when Democratic lawmakers questioned her decisions and repeatedly portrayed the expansive Justice Department as unfairly maligned by Democrats and those who dislike Trump. "I don't think in my time here, I've ever seen somebody be so disrespectful." Rep. Pramila Jayapal tells CBS News' Nikole Killion about the moment she asked U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi to apologize to survivors of convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein during a House hearing about the Justice Department's handling of the Epstein files: "They're devastated and also furious." Jayapal went on to say Bondi was "so out of line" for her behavior at the combative hearing, during which Democratic members of the House Judiciary Committee accused Bondi of orchestrating a "cover-up" by redacting the identities of many people whose names appeared in the more than 3 million pages of Epstein documents that the department released last month.

Today, I asked AG Pam Bondi if she would apologize to the survivors of Jeffrey Epstein’s abuse for the incredibly botched release — which identified victims while shielding perpetrators. She refused. This DOJ has mishandled the release of the files from the beginning — and it reeks of a cover-up. It is time to release all the files NOW.
