I started going back to school 4 years ago and graduate this year. When I can see my professor is using AI to respond to me it makes me feel like they don’t really care. In some of our discussion boards it’s just students and teachers using it to respond to each other. It makes me ask why I’m even doing this. It’s like everyone’s lazy or just doesn’t care. I’m one of the only students who actually uses personal examples or like idk “where I live in FL (example)…” everything else is just AI filler. Some of the responses are double but slightly different because they’re all using the same AI lol. What a weird fucking world.

You can't be pro-AI data center and pro-climate change at the same time. These things consume MASSIVE amounts of energy. Just pointing that out.

High school teacher here. Most teachers use AI to make their lessons and exercises. Students use AI to do it. Teachers then check it with AI. Complete waste of time. "Fortunately" we are not allowed to fail kids. Modern grading, and school, is a joke.

As an educator I think it's funny that you think college is about writing papers. You and I both studied English literature. You went to Cornell, and I went to a much smaller, lesser known school. I think the difference between us besides your vast wealth and fame is that you have a fixed mindset and approach life as if you have everything figured out and the glass is half empty. You influence a lot of people. Keep being funny but keep learning. Education has changed. Keep current.

AI is an epistemological calculator. Not using AI to write today would be like not using calculators to do math back in the day. Very few people understand what AI actually is.

Humans will not be replaced. AI is the modern encyclopedia from back in the day. It’s just the internet much faster than we are used to. Human connection will never be replaced, not without serious damage to our own kind.

yup… make them write in the classroom in front of you. It doesn’t have to be long. You can make judge learning in a well crafted one or two page paper.

It's a joke, I get it, but it's not accurate. Professors are using AI to detect whether students have used AI to write their papers, and if it's found that you have, you will be facing serious academic consequences, including potential expulsion.

Whe the student loans don’t get paid, either the taxpayers will bail them our or the financial system will crash or both. So yeah we will all be paying for AI’s societal harm.

@BillyDees At least, everyone is getting exposure to AI. Teachers don’t seem to be teaching students how to use it, how to use prompts effectively or to question AI’s accuracy.

It is even worse than that. Then they use AI special software (ie TurnitIn) to check if the AI generated essays actually used it, they ask students to correct and then students use AI to “humanize” the AI that got caught ! All this is hilarious. Admit that everyone is using it and adjust the evaluation structure of students. Less essays based, more in person exams.

It is happening whether we like it or not. We will just have to learn to adapt as we have always done. You cant put the Genie back into the lamp now.

Colleges have to adapt. I think one of education’s purposes, especially higher education’s, is to teach people how to reason. That’s what we called critical thinking fore decades. Not having good reasoning abilities means mediocre or even bad judgment and decision making, especially when working with AI. AI is a giant booster today, in all fields. Undergrad age is important in shaping thinking pattern. The question is how to adapt.

Facts. AI slop and AI circle jerks are becoming a large part of academia and so called “knowledge” jobs that are now mostly typing prompts into AI.🤦🏻‍♂️

This isn’t that clear cut. Professors are using technology and a combination testing mechanisms to start weeding them out.

In specific situations yes. My students have 5 quizzes. 3 multi choice tests written in case study formats usually. Developmental also interview an older adult w 10 interview questions and another 5 they do. They also volunteer in an assisted living or team present a topic
