"Ain't Nobody" almost never happened. Rufus initially rejected the song because its unusual drum machine pattern and minimalist arrangement sounded too different from the band's previous material. Keyboardist David "Hawk" Wolinski insisted on keeping it, believing it had the potential to become something special. According to Wolinski, producer Quincy...

“I Say a Little Prayer” was not originally planned for Aretha Franklin's 1968 album Aretha Now. During a break from the recording sessions, Aretha and her backing vocal group, The Sweet Inspirations, began singing Burt Bacharach and Hal David's song simply for fun. Producer Jerry Wexler heard them and immediately recognised that the performance was something special so he had it recorded. Originally released in 1968 as the B-side to “The House That Jack Built,” Aretha's version quickly received enough radio airplay to become a hit in its own right. It reached No. 10 on the Billboard Hot 100, No. 3 on the R&B Singles chart and No. 4 on the UK Singles Chart, becoming her ninth consecutive Top 10 hit on the Billboard Hot 100. Decades later, Bacharach and David both praised Franklin's interpretation, with Bacharach saying that she had made a better record than the original.

“Easy Lover” has a remarkably spontaneous origin. The song was written by Philip Bailey, Phil Collins and bassist Nathan East near the end of the sessions for Bailey's 1984 solo album, Chinese Wall, which Collins was producing. East started playing a riff on the piano and within about 20 minutes the three musicians had the basic song. They recorded a rough demo that same night, still singing the temporary phrase “choosy lover.” Collins took the idea home, returned with the lyrics and the title “Easy Lover,” and the finished track came together in roughly 48 hours. Released in the United States in November 1984 and in the UK in February 1985, “Easy Lover” became a huge international hit, reaching No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and spending four weeks at No. 1 on the UK Singles Chart. It also reached No. 3 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart and No. 5 on the Mainstream Rock chart. The song was nominated for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal at the 1986 Grammy Awards.

“Seven Nation Army” was written by Jack White for The White Stripes’ 2003 album Elephant. The riff came first: he stumbled on it during a soundcheck at Melbourne’s Corner Hotel in January 2002 and initially thought it could work as a James Bond theme. Released in 2003 as the lead single from Elephant, the song reached No. 1 on Billboard’s Alternative chart, No. 7 on the UK Singles Chart and only No. 76 on the Billboard Hot 100. It won the Grammy for Best Rock Song in 2004, while Elephant won Best Alternative Music Album. Neither the American nor the British label had wanted it as the first single. The riff later escaped the song entirely: fans of Club Brugge began chanting it in 2003 and by the 2006 World Cup it had become a stadium anthem, sung without a single word of the original lyric. Two decades on, crowds at football grounds and other sports events are still chanting it.

"Need You Tonight" is a song by the Australian rock band INXS, released as the first single from their 1987 album, Kick, as well as the fourth song on the album. It is the only INXS single to reach No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. It also achieved their highest charting position in the United Kingdom, where the song reached number two on the UK Singles Chart; however, this peak was only reached after a re-release of the single in November 1988. On its first run on the UK charts in October 1987, it stalled at No. 58. It was one of the last songs recorded for the album, yet it would arguably become the band's signature song.

Produced by Guy Stevens, the song fused punk rock with reggae, rockabilly, ska and other influences, showcasing the band's increasingly diverse musical style. It reached No. 11 on the UK Singles Chart. The song was also released as a single in the United States, although it failed to enter the Billboard Hot 100. Despite its relatively modest chart performance, "London Calling" became one of The Clash's most iconic songs and has since been regarded as one of the defining recordings of the punk era.

“Time After Time” was written by Cyndi Lauper and Rob Hyman of The Hooters for Lauper’s 1983 debut album, She’s So Unusual. It was a late addition to the record: producer Rick Chertoff felt the album still needed one more song so Lauper and Hyman stayed behind at the Record Plant and wrote it together. The title came from a TV Guide listing for the 1979 science-fiction film "Time After Time", Lauper meant it only as a placeholder but every alternative sounded wrong. Released in 1984 as the second single from She’s So Unusual, after “Girls Just Want to Have Fun,” “Time After Time” became Lauper’s first No. 1, spending two weeks at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 and also topping the Adult Contemporary chart. It reached No. 3 on the UK Singles Chart and was nominated for Song of the Year at the 1985 Grammy Awards. Miles Davis later recorded his own version for the 1985 album "You’re Under Arrest", helping turn the song into a standard far beyond pop radio.

I have always loved the story of how Chaka Khan’s version of “I Feel for You” came together. After she recorded her vocals, the legendary producer Arif Mardin worked overnight to turn the song into something Chaka was shocked by and had to be convinced to release. Not to mention the happy accident of his finger slipping and creating that now-iconic stuttering, repeated “Chaka Khan” vocal effect at the beginning. People don’t realize this today because we’re so used to it, but “I Feel for You” was revolutionary in 1984 because it collapsed the boundaries between R&B, funk, pop, hip-hop, and electronic music in a single record. Basically it was several generations of music smashed together in one song and instead of sounding messy it sounded fresh and exciting. I wish she liked this song….she still doesn’t!!!…but that doesn’t mean we can’t love it!

Released in 2000 as the first single from Wheatus, the track became one of the defining anthems of the era. It reached No. 2 on the UK Singles Chart, spent four weeks at No. 1 in Australia where it was the country’s second-best-selling single of 2000, and also topped the charts in Austria and Flanders. In the United States it peaked at No. 7 on the Modern Rock Tracks chart but never entered the Billboard Hot 100. Its success was boosted by the soundtrack of the film Loser, and Jason Biggs and Mena Suvari also appear in the music video. “Running Up That Hill (A Deal with God)” was written, produced and arranged by Kate Bush for her 1985 album Hounds of Love. Bush originally wanted to call it “A Deal with God,” but her record company worried that the religious wording could limit the song's chances on radio and television, so the title was changed for its original release. Released in August 1985, “Running Up That Hill” reached No. 3 on the UK Singles Chart and became one of Bush's defining songs. Her performance on Top of the Pops helped give the song an equally memorable visual identity. Decades later, its use in the fourth season of Stranger Things triggered an extraordinary resurgence: in 2022 the song returned to the UK chart and reached No. 1, 37 years after its original release, setting several Official Charts records along the way.

“My Happy Ending” was written by Avril Lavigne and Butch Walker for Lavigne's second studio album, Under My Skin (2004). The song was actually a relatively late addition to the album: Walker initially gave it a softer arrangement built around acoustic guitar and programmed drums, but after drummer Kenny Aronoff added live percussion, the track evolved into the bigger more powerful sound heard on the finished recording.
